Type O rear end gaskets

I am wondering if people would be interested in "correct" type O rear end gaskets if I had some made. I can get a small quantity of them made for a very reasonable price but not sure how many people really use them. I know many people just use RTV instead and get away with it but the original gasket is made to let more oil into the tubes. If I do this the gasket would run $12-$14 each and shipping. These would be reproduced form an NOS gasket and other than the TOP stamp at the top of the gasket you would not know the difference. Color may be different?

If someone has a rare or difficult gasket they need reproduced I can likely get them done for you as long as you have a good original or NOS or even the original prints that can be copied. Nothing extruded or metal.

I would take 2. I'm wrapping up rebuilding mine now, I would prefer one in the next month or so if at all possible. Neat project!

OK, I guess I need some education. How does the factory gasket promote more oil flow into the axle tubes than the aftermarket gaskets such as the Fel Pro RDS55008?

Good question Joe, I assumed a replacement wasn't available.

I am not an expert but from what I understand is that the "hooks" in the gasket direct oil into the holes in the back of the housing as you are driving and oil is slinging. I believe the gasket you posted is for the O type that has sealed bearings and no oil needed. Again, I am not an expert on the subject but I know the correct gaskets sell quick when you post them on eBay. I have enough NOS for me that I am not worried about it myself but just wanted to see if enough people want the correct one to make it worth my time to get a small run of them.

OK, that makes sense - the Fel Pro gasket was designed for the sealed bearing diff that was made for more years, and Fel Pro (or others) don't make a gasket specifically for the open bearing rear that was made in 1970 only.

I could be wrong but don't all the sealed bearings get replaced with non sealed bearings when rebuilt? I don't know them well but I was thinking the sealed bearing was no longer available?

If I do this I don't think I could get them done that fast.

Mine being a 70, yes I want at least one. I usually RTV the gasket to the cover, allows easy removal, I will get the W27 replica cover.

The axle seal is inboard of the bearings on those rears (unlike the 1970 version), so installing an open bearing instead of a sealed bearing would be a really, really bad idea.

I haven't bought any RW507CR sealed bearings for many years, but a quick internet search shows them to be readily available from the local auto parts store and many online sellers.

I did not know that. So this is a 70 only gasket. For some reason I thought they were changed to the 70 style when rebuilt. The guy that rebuilt my first O type made a seal mistake and had to do it over. I know we talked something about this and I bet he had it confused and I have just thought that ever since.

I am being told that these gaskets are available somewhere aftermarket. If so and are a reasonable price then I will let them take care of our needs. I just don't want to put out $200 to $300 in product if it is available elsewhere for a fair price. He is making a call to look into it. I don't have a problem getting it done but don't want to get stuck with all of them.

At one time I know someone offered them but have not seen any for a very long time.

I hate to put out my name for a purchase and then back out. Having said that, if your gaskets are for a 1970-only rear end, then unfortunately I don't have a need for them. I should have let the dust settle before jumping into the ring...

Eric, I found this source for the correct one at a place called Riverside Gear when I was doing my blue car. They aren't cheap at 20.00 each

Not a problem at all. Information is why I was starting the thread. Just want to see if it would be worth my time doing.

Not cheap but not much more than I would have to charge for one if I did it. I would have to be at 12-14 to be worth my time. Now that we know we can get them I am not sure there is a need for me to do this.

They are not cheap and their shipping is stupid money, I bought 2 gaskets and shipping was $15.05 not sure it is worth the overall cost

Eric, I will guarantee you if you go into the market at 12-14, those guys will have a price drop to 8.00 or so the minute they find out about it. Trying to make dough on plain paper cut loose gaskets is a tough go - ask me sometime how I know.

My original thought was to offer the gasket just so that it was available. I really would not be making anything off of them when you count my time dealing with them and packaging and going to the post office. The only time I would come out ok is when someone got more than one.

The place I am dealing with can make low quantity runs of gaskets for special projects. I do not know how they can do it so cheap though.

Hope this is a project that is realized for the Olds community. I am thinking that the 69 Hurst Olds used these gaskets as well. I would have to look at my parts book.
