a true barn find
#41
i have bought out the Oldsmobile's and parts. it is a long story but wanted to fill everyone in on some of the details now that i have everything in it's place and secure. one day at work the guys were poking fun at me for all my Oldsmobile stuff i do. later that night i was pulling a 70 Cutlass 4 door home and one of them called me. it was my best friend Bruce that i also work with. he was acting very excited and said he found a barn full of 70 & 71 442s. he also said that there was a basement and another building full of NOS and used parts. i just laughed it off and figured he was messing with me like they were earlier in the day. the more he talked the more he realized i thought he was making it up. he ended up making it very clear that he was telling me the truth and give me the guys name and number. the next day i called him up and we were talking enough that i knew right away this guy knows his Oldsmobile's. he had collected all this in the early 80s to early 90s. i ask if he wanted to sell anything or all of it or what his plans were. he said he needed to move some of it or all of it. i was so excited then that i almost peed myself. a couple days later my dad went with me to look at all of it. i couldn't hardly take it all in when we got there. it was like going to a homecoming swap meet but i was the only buyer. i never did buy anything from him till the next trip and then it was only a set of NOS hood moldings for my rallye 350. as many of you know, i started to sell off some of his collection for a commission. about 2 months ago he mentioned he was interested in a buy out. i had just got the Jetfire and sank a pile in it and still rebuilding the turbo, engine, and transmission. i didn't have a dime to my name. i talked to my dad and he said i could borrow money on his house if i wanted. i didn't want to and i highly recommend that nobody ever borrow money from a relative. me and my dad are a very rare exception in this. we both can trust each other in this area. well i got the money and bought him out. i called up as many of my friends and relatives as i could round up with trailers and we went to get as much as we could 3 weeks ago. there were a total of 7 truck and trailer loads that i brought home. now i am working alot of over time at work and don't have as much time to sell stuff. i hope to have my parents house paid off in the next year but i have a lot to do.
this guy is a great machinist and worked at Allison in Indianapolis. he looks around here but never posts. he has become a good friend to me and i still plan to go visit him when i am in his area.

If it were me those cars would be tucked away for me and the parts used to restore them. After that extras go for sale! Or wait maybe to finish another project I find! ;-) Nice score very jealous to saw the least!

if you can come pick stuff up i can sell anytime. my problem is listing, boxing and shipping right now. the time i do have now i am trying to sell the convertibles to pay down the loan. nothing W-30 or parts to restore a W-30 are for sale at this time.

the one with the W-27 i have no documentation to. i feel like it is a real W-30 but it looks to be messed with pretty heavy back in the day. the blue one is a real W-30, i have the original OW transmission and last night i found the broadcast card still under the back seat. the title for the blue one shows that he got it in 1981. it sit ever since. it is a very unmolested car other than some of it is apart. it still has the spiral shocks on it. A/C and 8-track, PB & PS are the only options i see right now.

I just visited the new Oldsmobile dealership in person, I mean Eric's house, & saw the MASSIVE amount of parts he now has & I can tell you he will be selling parts from this score for many years. Tons & tons of stuff!

Isn't it nice when a new dealership opens?? Doesn't even need to do special orders for inventory. I wish I was there to help him inventory all that stuff. Eric? I work for cheap....just keep the snakes away from me and I'm a happy guy.
What you guys probably know is that this isn't his full time job and like everyone with a base job, there's only 24 hours in a day no matter how you want it to be more. Can you even begin to imagine the hectic life he's going to have for the next 10 years? I think he deserves kudos for taking this leap and risking financial obligations up the ying yang.

ya, i think this year is going to age me about 10. they made me manager at work 2 months ago and at the same time trying to adjust to that i do this.
Allan, i will take care of the snakes if you take care of the spiders.

The blue and red W30s wouldn't be leaving my grasp.

at this point i have no intentions of any kind of selling the blue one or the W-27 out of the red one but that causes a problem. i am not going to keep 3 cars. i have the Jetfire that i got for me and my wife. i have my Rallye 350 that i got in 1990, it was my first car, and now this blue W-30. the Jetfire is not going anywhere. as much as i hate to say it, i think the Rallye 350 will be for sale. in 2000 i had a 72 W-30 and this Rallye 350. i had to sell one and i sold the W-30. it is a decision that i have grown to hate. i would rather have the W-30 back. i don't want to make the same mistake twice. if i had the money, i would restore them all.

I'd still suggest keeping both W30s, though. Restore one and keep the other as backup parts for the one you restore. It would be even better if you had a barn to keep the parts car in.

Just do what he did tuck them away until "One Day they will be restored" ;-) Do they all seem to be unmolested? I'm completely jealous and would of made some big decision to grab this barn find. Find the money someway some how! (Did I mention I'm a bad influence?) I live in CA and barn finds are rare and usually way overpriced! Though my friend told me of him and his buddy finding a 69/70 Judge in what was left of a building and getting it for free plus clear in the DMV! I sold some of my firearms to get my baby and thought about doing again minus I have no storage to hide toys unless I rent a big unit adn CA prices are crazy for those. So you are planning on selling the 71 442 convert and the 71 SX convert? Then if it were me the w27 would stay put in that car as well.

here are a couple pictures of the green 442. i finely got it inside at it's temporary home tonight. this car is going to make a great driver when finished. it was painted many years ago but never finished. the body work is not of great quality but when finished it will still be nice. it has the original engine and transmission also. it is a 442 but they drilled the holes for the W-30 emblems. with it being painted i will have to install them. i don't like adding W-30 emblems when it is not one. i will get the convertibles sold first and then this will be next. i hope to be listing the convertibles again in 2 weeks.

Sure looks like it Ted.
Eric, hard to tell from the pics that there are any piercings on those front fenders at all. I see it will have the sports mirrors as well - cool. Got a spare OAI hood you could throw on there and make it into a W-31? Yeah, I know. Easier to weld the holes shut.
