tire/rim date code

This pic of rim/tire is my friends car , he is interested in knowing the date codes.
The rim appears to be 5/22, however I told him I am not completely positive but would find out.

Any help would be appreciated ty

I'd say the rim is dated May 22, 1968. Don't know about the tire.

If that's an old tire, I don't think tires were dated until the early 90s or so. That's just hypothesis on my part; others might be more informed!

Yes, may 22, 1968 for the wheel. Look for raised ovals close to the rim lip with the DOT codes. They will not have an exact year but most should have a 3 digit # in the last oval. Ex. 188 would be 18th week of 68, 78, 88 etc.

What are the specifics of the tire? What car is it from? Here's a pic of the DOT codes on pre-'71 Goodyears & Firestones. I can decode the Goodyears.

Anyone know how to decode the "Stones"?

There are no tire date codes shown in that photo. Pre-2000 date codes are three digits, post-2000 are four digits. No letters.

There was an extensive discussion about date codes, with examples, just a few days ago in another thread.

Hey Dean,

Could the d/c of the tire be the 22nd week of 68 because the first 3 numbers are 228??
This would make sense since the d/c of the rim is May 22, 1968.

Just a thought....

Sam

That's not a date code - keep looking! Try the backside.

What are the specifics of the tire and/or car? Fiberglass belted '70 series tires didn't exist for '68 except for H/O.

I posted this on the other thread for the first 2 digits on Goodyear tires:

These are for Goodyear and may work for your first tire:
First digit
M or Z =66
K or Y =67
L or T =68
J or U =69
E or W =70
H or X =71
G or S =72

Second digit
T=Jan
U=Feb
F=Mar
S=Apr
Y=May
N=Jun
P=Jul
A=Aug
C=Sep
K=Oct
E=Nov
R=Dec

So April of 68
