Temperature sending unit

Greetings. Having a problem. Have a 68 convertible 350 2bbl. with A/C. Motor has the thermostatic vacuum valve in driver side port of intake. I dont see a temp. sensor unit in intake anywhere. There is a plug in port on pass side of intake. I bought one to put in but it is too big for hole. Where does that sucker go? I have a loose plug hanging next to oil sending unit which I'm sure is for temp sensor. Is there a smaller diameter temp sensor for that motor? Not comfortable running motor without it. Appreciate any response.

Sounds like the vac valve is not supposed to be in that port - the temp sensor should be there instead.
The vac valve should be in the other port. Is this vac valve even supposed to be there? Is it original to the engine? A picture might help. If aftermarket, it might not be the right one and they stuck it there cause it did not fit in the other hole.
Just my guess.
