Tank wont drop

I have tested my fuel gauge system and it all traces back to the sending unit which i plan to replace tomorrow, however i have already tried to drop the tank once and it feels like it is either stuck on something or possibly welded from the top. Car is a 1972 delta 88 5.7. Am I missing anything? I have disconnected all visible lines and it only budges so much before hearing a cracking noise. Any suggestions or should I test my luck? I rather not tear a hole on the top of the tank. Looks original.

The tar based padding will hold the tank up , Keep something under so it can't drop to far and pry it lose, should drop down, be sure you have the ground wire free before dropping all the way. Good luck

FWIW when I am removing or installing tanks, especially with gas still in them I use a pair of threaded rods (appx 18" long) w/ a nut & washer on them. I replace the tank bolts with them & can simply spin the nuts by hand to walk the tank down or up. Eliminates some potential struggle or damage when doing this solo.

In this case you could free up both hands to do the pulling & wiggling while you can gain better visibility of the situation and the straps are still there to catch the tank if you don't have good control of it.
