A sub is out of place for the music I listen to. With that said, most place them on the ledge and point them at the back of the rear seat in the trunk. You can mount the amp back there also.

It all depends on your music tastes and how well the rest can keep up. My 67 has 35w x4 to MB Quart separates in the front and 2 way 6x9s out back, with 150w bridged to a free air 6x9 sub.
It rocks really well inside the car,but you won't hear me bangin down the street.

You will get maximum performance from the woofer if you put it in the enclosure pointing to the rear of the vehicle instead of against the rear seat. Woofers like LOTS of room to breathe and bass is non-directional so it will make the same amount of noise no matter which direction you point it. Might as well maximize the effect. There are probably as many ways to put a woofer in a '74 Cutlass as there are ways to build an Olds 350.

One of the simplest way is a sealed box on the ledge pointing into the trunk. You can probably find a ready-made box at your local stereo shop or Circuit City. Another simple way is to mount a piece of particle board or MDF to the bottom of the rear deck tightly and mount the woofer to the rear deck with it. This requires cutting a hole the size of the woofer in the metal and putting speaker grill cloth (double-knit polyester) over the opening.

Another way is to seal off one side of the trunk behind the wheel well and put it there. One on each side will add to the effect, but the enclosures need to be sealed tightly or you create standing waves that will cancel the sound.

One of the most difficult but custom ways would be a band-pass enclosure mounted on the ledge and ported through the rear deck.

You can get an amazing amount of technology into putting bass in a car. It all depends on how dedicated you are to keeping the vehicle and how much time and effort you want to put into it.

Once upon a time I was one of the best stereo installers in Southern California. I still had red hair back then too.

Just make sure you aren't rattling the license plate going down the street. Some people like good sounding music, and some people just want to be obnoxious because they feel screwed by life; make sure you're the first type.

Don't share your music with the outside world, It's doubtful if we have the same tastes..... Tedd

There is absolutely no reason classic music of any kind has to sound like a clock radio. A full spectrum sound system can enhance your listening pleasure greatly, even in a car.

Yes ! Any kind of music is more enjoyable with a decent system . I blast my music at times going down the road , but turn it way down when I'm waiting at traffic lights and such , for I don't need to share it with others .

I wouldn't mind something more modern , but I'm just fine with mine . I have an Carver Magnetic Field Amp from around 1989 , Rockford Fausgate speaker box from the early 90's , and a Clarion CD player / radio from the mid 90's . This thing cranks , it may not sound AS good as today's stuff , but I'm happy with what I got .

Circuit City is gone, bankrupt in 2009... Best Buy maybe. As far as listening to my 50's/60's music, I see no reason for a sub.

In addition I'm going deaf from abusing my hearing in my younger years and any conversation I have must be louder than the tinnitus.

Circuit City, Best Buy, Radio Shack, Fry's Electronics, they're all the same to me.
