Stud Welder

Yes, I've been called that, but that's not the context of this thread. Any recommendations? Light garage use. Amazon has entry-level Motor Guard and H&S Auto Shot kits for $213, and then there's the Harbor Freight offering at $100 before coupon.

I've got the HF unit (that I bought used) and it works fine. Any of these takes some practice to learn the correct amount of time to heat the stud so that the weld is strong enough for pulling without burning through or warping the metal. The quick release puller is really handy to have.

I have a HF version I bought used for $25, works fine. I prefer the H&S slide hammer, or T puller over the HF slide hammer, but it'll work

I bought my H&S stud welder 8 years ago. Worth the money. But I'm a body man. It has the best pin slide hammer imo. It uses a twist lock vs the cam type lock. A little accessory I tell people to buy is the stud buddy. It's a little pin leverage bar. Instead of smacking the dent out you can carefully pull it while you tap the crown down and work the dent out. Alot less stretch involved. I like to really leave the metal as flat as possible and use as little filler as possible and this tool helps control the metal movement alot. Another thing to consider is how much time the pin needs to weld I had the harbor freight gun and it took alot to get the pin to weld. With the H&S it's a 1 sec or less time frame.
