steering pump alignment

hi, long time viewer, first time caller. I took my engine out over the winter and i cannot, for the life of me, figure out how to put the st pump back on so the belt runs out. Does someone have a picture or a diagram on how this thing goes back on my 68 cutlass 455??? It's on now but leaning forward at the top of the pulley (the bottom appears to be in the correct location). help please.

There is two spacers on the pump brackets. One spacer is on the top ear of the bracket in front of the pump. The other, on the bottom bracket (located below the pump) between the bracket and the engine block. Sounds like one is missing. Do you have the chassis manual. Good pics there.

If not, I can see if mine has an exploded view for you to look at.

Front spacer is 3/4" at timing mark stud and side spacer is 1/2" that bolts to block

It's a stud on the pump. I assembled it with no spacers. I think I ate the assembly manual a long time ago. An exploded view would be helpful. I tried a dozen different spacer placements and I'm running out of swears and beers.

Also keep in mind that in 71, they changed pump styles.
He needs an exploded view of a 68-70 setup.

The brackets are the same. The only difference in the pump is the shape of the reservoir.

Thanks all, I wouldn't say no to that exploded view. i monkeyed with it a little more last night and it just isn't lining up. I bracket race eighth mile with it (just for fun) and I will definitely throw that belt at speed the way it is now.

This is from a 307, but the bracket is the same from 1968-1990. Items # 7 and # 8 are the spacers. Item # 11 is the main difference between 307s and older motors. For the 68-76 cars this part was actually triangular with two holes to fit both BBO and SBO.

Are you sure the problem is the PS pump bracket alignment? Have you changed the other pulleys at any time?

I appreciate the effort but this isn't exactly what i'm looking at on my car (no idea what stock looked like). No other pulleys have been replaced. The front bracket is similar to number 4 above but not exact. I don't have number 14 instead i have a cradle like bracket in the back. Its a one piece bracket that bolts to the side of the block and to the front stud, the same stud that the lower hole on the front bracket uses...i think. i don't have anything like number 11.

I've got a 1968 455 from a Delta 88 that has a cradle like bracket in the back. I'm having trouble with my photobucket site this evening so I'll try to find a picture of it tomorrow. John

that would be great. i have been out all weekend but i will dive back under the hood tomorrow night after work. i'm close but not quite there. The only component i changed was the aluminum water pump. maybe the flange is a bit thicker and its throwing things off. no idea.

The bracket in the photos is the same as part no. 14 in the drawing I posted. Again, it's the same on all 1968-1990 Olds V8s.

yes, that is the bracket i have. The stud on the front of the block is also the same. im wondering if i need part number 14 to pull the front bracket back toward the head. i removed the adjustment bolt, number 3 in the diagram, the pump still leans forward at the top causing the belt misalignment. i did not use a spacer, number 5 in the diagram, between the bracket and the pump and that adjustment bolt number 3. but that omission alone will not cure the issue. when i backed off that adjustment bolt the front bracket did move forward at least 1/4 inch so i think it actually pulls the pump further out of alignment as i tighten it. I do not have bracket number 14, never have. Do you think that is the problem?

Again, the bracket in the photos IS part number 14 in the drawing. Did you mean part no. 11? If so, yes, you need it.

sorry, my bad, yes part number 11 is what i meant. i'll hit the local wrecking yard tomorrow for one and let you know what i come up with. Thanks for the assistance.

Since i found guys that know what they are talking about, i have a 3.30:1 or something in there, in an olds 12 bolt posi behind. the 1/8th mile is tearing me up, i need some shorter legs. since i have a 3 carrier, do you know where i can find a 3.60:1 or similar rear gear set? i own a bunch of chevys so i don't know olds rear end posi ratios so please forgive the ignorance.

If you strike out on bracket #11 I've got an extra.

Well Joe, I guess I'm not used to seeing this bracket without the power steering pump bolted to it. I thought it was something different!

i cant use the bracket because my aftermarket aluminum heads aren't drilled and tapped for it. I did some spacing as per the diagram and i have it real close if not right on. i can't thank you guys enough for taking the time to help.

The only place the PS Pump bracket attaches to the head is at the front exhaust manifold bolt. I suspect your head IS tapped for this. Every other bolt on the bracket attaches to the block.
