steering gear box

I am changing to power steering and have read the best change would be jeep grand Cherokee. My question is what power steering pump brackets and hoses would I need? This may not be in the right forum

Chevy S 10 will also work, the box with the 4 bolt top cover,3 bolt will not work, U pull should have more of those than Jeep. By the way I have pump brackets if you need those, I also have pump with single belt pulley. Let me know if I can help.

This is interesting. Not meaning to hi-jack, but I was wondering about this too.

Johnny, is a stock PS pump and pulley used with the S10 / Jeep Grand Cherokee steering gear box? It would be easy to have a hi pressure line fabricated that would go from the stock PS pump to the new steering gear box. Does the S10 / Jeep pitman arm attach to the center link without modification, or is the stock pitman arm put on the new steering gear box?

Center link for PS is different than manual. will need to be changed to PS link, S 10 Pittman will work I'm not sure about Jeep. Pump will work with any Saginaw gear.

power steering

Jo the year of my car is a 1970 true 442 with 455. I thought the pitman arm would work on the power gear box. I read the hoses had to have different connections for the newer gear. What do I need to use for a ragjoint?

If you have a flair pump end and and a O ring gear end the 1978 Cutlass 360 has those same ends ( may be 79 or 80 but check the parts house near you)

Just trying to save you some trouble.

Thumbs up Steering Gear Upgrade for 72 Cutlass Supreme

I am a little late to this discussion; but, was following the thread as I was facing the same challenge of finding a "Quick Ratio" steering gear box for my Olds Cutlass.

After a lot of reading and research I settled on a factory rebuild from Lares model #974. I contacted Lares and they build a G'Box that is a bolt in replacement that is a 10:1 ratio. The box comes with the correct rag joint.

It is now mounted and I am having custom hoses made up from a local shop.

My install is a little more unique in that I am using a March Serpentine Belt system with a remote reservoir.

The Lares box was only $210 + shipping from Rock Auto: (https://www.rockauto.com/en/moreinfo...1691&jsn=10675)

This is the same box that Year One & OPGI buy from Lares and re-sell for about $600.

After my install is complete I will post the fitting & hose specs I used with photos. Hopefully, this will help someone who faces the same question.

Cheers!

Cool

I ordered the Lares 1353 for my 1969. Anyone know the difference between the 974 and 1353?

(Other than 379).

The 1353 is the metric version, that why it needs the hose adapter, idk if there are other differences.

You are correct RR. The #974 has a 11/16-18 high pressure port: and, a 9/16-18 low pressure/return port. The G'Box casting should be the same - I would call Lares and ask their Tech Support - they were very helpful to me (http://www.larescorp.com).

Also, note that some models are (3) bolt mount and some are (4) bolt mount. The unit for a Cutlass stock OEM was a (3) bolt from 70 - 72 (not sure rest of years).

Cheers!

So here's an update: I have installed the PS Gear Box. Everything fit perfectly as OEM.

I am using the March Serp Belt system which uses a contemporary GM PS pump, so I had to have custom hoses made up by a local Hydraulics supplier ~ $115 for the set - a little pricey...

On "drive-ability" I don't have an answer yet as we are just now getting ready to re-mount the body to the frame.

Sadly, I do not expect to be driving until June some time - but, I will keep you posted.

Tomorrow is planned for engine break-in. Fingers crossed!

I too use the 974 Lares box on a 70. It works great it's firmer than the factory variable ratio box with a good road feel. It doesnt have the real easy luxury car feel. It is 2.5 turns lock to lock.

Thanks for the info but I'm a bit leery of the 10:1 ratio.
I Ordered a NEW Delphi CH27042 from CarID. for the 72 Cutlass

It's the "plated" OPGI branded unit but at a slightly better price
Tired of hit and miss (mostly miss) with re-mans and pick 'n pull Jeep boxes

I'm madder than a rained on rooster.

That damn OPGI steering box arrived and its has only a 70* pitman sweep vs. 90*.

After checking the manufactuer part number on it vs the OPGI number - it is for FIREBIRD/CAMARO.

It's going back.

Well... OPGI has a reputation for being kind of hit or miss...

Sorry.

Lares, Lee, and several others seem to have good reputations.

You'll get this put together, and you'll like the results when you do.

Yeah, I'm no big fan of the 'Zone, but I'll take them over most of the highfalutin' "restoration" suppliers out there.

Enjoy the car!

I just did a Lares 974 in my 71. I like it, it was a direct bolt in deal. No hunting for odd parts/adapters.
2 thumbs up for the Lares 974!

Does the 974 have a full ~90* pitman rotation or the ~75* rotation

I found it was easier to have my pump and box rebuilt, of course with the 12.7:1 hi resistance feel and high psi pump upgrades. FYI in the old school Saginaw pumps it is recommended that we use Type F or Dex lll ATF, not the thin clear sheet meant for later model and rack n pinion set ups
