Spilling fuel

94 cutlass supreme. When filling up at the gas station I can't get more than a couple gallons in before I hear gas spilling on the ground. Look under the car and there's gas spilling out from what looks like the top of the tank because I can tell its overflowed and spilled over the sides of the tank and all over the exhaust pipe and ground. Any ideas? Nothing is coming out near the nozzle. Strong odor of gas for at least two days after i fuel up.

Time for you or someone who knows what to look for inspect and figure out why. It could be the tank itself, a line, filler neck, fuel sender, etc...

Sounds like your vent at the front passenger side of the tank is clogged or not letting air out of the tank as gas takes up that volume. Or it could be that there is a crack low down on the vent. Another possibility is you have a rust hole or fracture in the tank. I would jack the car up and inspect the tank and vent. Al

You have a 23 year old car with a potentially very dangerous fault.
I think you need to take the tank out for a proper look and permanent repair.

Roger.
