Speedometer seals

Is there more than one O-ring on the speedometer housing on the transmission? I replaced the outer O-ring and am wondering if there is one on the inside where the shaft of the gear is? The trans is a Muncie 4 speed but I think the speedo housing is the same for Auto cars. Thank you.

One outside, one inside. What would prevent oil from leaking out between the driven gear and the housing if there weren't a seal there? Also check the plastic driven gear for wear where the seal rides on it.

Speedo O-ring

Thanks Joe, I thought there was suppose to be one. It was missing when I was replacing the outside O-ring. I replaced the gear, it is still available from GM. I called Napa but they had no listing. I thought this was strange because I replaced the seal on my 71 Cutlass with Auto not to long ago.

There are kits offered on ebay with both seals for $12.

Speedometer seal

I'm thinking that my speedometer housing is different then the one your showing, the seal they list at Napa is larger in diameter

Well, I spoke with a Muncie expert and he said the earlier Muncies (63-65) didn't have a seal for the gear shaft. It relied on the spiral design on the shaft to carry the oil away from the end of the gear. Makes sense to me but I'll just change mine to a more updated one. Thought you guys would like some extra learnin!
