Some Obscure Details Documented Off Original Parts

As I do more of these A bodies, I'm getting better at noticing details that are I that aren't in the PIM, CSM, or body manual that I'll use on this and future restorations. Maybe these aren't news to some of you, and I know there can be differences between plants and Olds employee habits, but here's two I documented:

1) Paint on the clutch and brake pedals. I've known approximately how high the paint goes up the spines of the pedals, but I did not know the angle of the parting line between paint and bare metal, and that the bottom of the "U" also has paint on it.

2) Placement of the air cleaner decal. I've seen these applied at various locations. This intact original has the center of the sticker exactly 12 1/4 inches from where the snout sticks out of the base. I don't know if this would be the same for OAI or dual snout bases.

I would bet that the pedals were dipped, like the front end components.

Assembly line parts were dipped in a tank of water with 1-2" of paint floating on top.

The parts were hung on racks to air dry.

No primer or surface prep, just dip, dry, install.

Note that the area of the part that does not show has no paint.

I saw this at the Framingham BOP plant in 1972 when I worked there.
