Solid Lifter Showroom at the GM Nationals
Solid Lifter Showroom at the GM Nationals
While I thought the GM Nationals was somewhat disappointing, I have to give a GREAT BIG THANKS to BRIAN HENDERSON and JOE SWEEZEY from the SUPER CAR WORKSHOP for inviting me and my '69 W-31 Nostalgia Race Car to participate in this year's "Solid Lifter Showroom". They are a class act and two of the friendliest guys in this hobby. They went out of their way to help me and all the participants and were cordial to each and every hobbyist that asked them technical questions. They had on display a couple of the cars they had recently restored and the only words that come to mind are "stunning" and "breathtaking". The quality of their work is top notch and no detail is overlooked. The theme of this year's show was "Buick Performance" and they had some beauties on hand. Included in the show was a 1968 Buick Skylark GS, a 1972 Skylark GS Stage 1 Conv., a 1970 Saturn Yellow GSX, a 1970 GS Stage 1 hardtop that was a past Hemmings Muscle Machine of the year, and last but not least, a 1987 GNX that was the final one produced--#547 that had been driven a total of 66 miles!!!
Representing Oldsmobile was my 1969 W-31 "Anderson Olds F/S" un-restored race car, and a former race car that was restored to original specs. in magnificent condition--a 1971 W-30 4-speed with a grand total of 1098 miles!. I'm not sure what next year's marque brand will be, but you can bet I'll be there either as a participant with a different car or as a spectator. I met some super guys and gals that share the same passion as myself and most of the members here. Some of the other entries were a bona-fide and documented 1968 "Motion Phase lll" Camaro with original L88 4-speed drivetrain, a Hugger Orange 1969 Camaro RS/SS with factory installed 396/375hp with aluminum heads, a 1 of 5 1969 Chevelle SS 396/375hp 4-speed Convertible with factory installed aluminum heads, two 1969 COPO Camaro 427s, a 1969 Chevelle COPO 427 4-speed, a ultra-rare 1969 Chevelle Malibu "300" model with 396/375hp 4-speed with 8900 original miles and original paint that was museum quality, two 1968 Camaro Z/28s, an original owner un-touched 1971 Chevelle SS Big Block with 21k miles, a 1969 Pontiac Trans Am Ram Air lll 4-speed, a 1969 Chevy Biscayne 427/425hp 4-speed, and a couple other noteworthy Chevelles and Novas that were show quality. Each and every car invited had it's own special story to tell.
Again, a special thanks to Brian and Joe and also to some other entrants that I became friends with that helped me with my car and display. I am still recovering from MAJOR back and spine surgery, and all the guys were more than happy to pitch in and lend a helping hand---after all, that's what this hobby and especially this great site in particular is known for---HELPING EACH OTHER!!!
Bye for now, Dave.
