Slow convertible top

On a 71 Cutlass, I have to hold the switch for about 7-10 seconds with the motor whirring before anything happens. I'm thinking it is low on fluid. I have zero experience with convertibles. The manual calls for Type A, but I'm thinking it isn't made anymore as I haven't found any on store shelves. Can one use any Dexron fluid, or is something better?

Next question, where did it go? Lines may be loose or leaking or cylinders may be leaking. If you just keep adding it will continue to go wherever it's been going.i used a cheap clear catsup bottle to fill. 442.com has some convertible instructions on their website.

Mine also got worse and worse. When I replaced my interior I found a mess under the rear seat. The left cylinder was leaking. I replaced both cylinders. All ok now.

Good to know, thanks. I'm working through a few electrical gremlins then I'll be attacking the roof system. It will involve cleaning and lubricating the mechanism and checking fluid level and I'll check those cylinders. I suppose you get a free undercoating under the rear seat if they are leaking.

When I got my car, the right side cylinder was leaking and the fluid just puddled up under the passengers side of the back seat. From what I remember, there's a depression or two in the floor pan where the fluid can collect.
