Shop pics

Ive been through a lot of threads in this forum, and have noticed quite a few cool looking shops that people have their cars in. I didn't notice any threads about "COOL SHOPS", so I thought I would start one here. I built the pole barn in 1995, 30x60 with a 20x30 loft. Unlike the cool nice "CLEAN" shops Ive seen here, mine is just my attempt a organization. LOL. I'm going to try to post some pics here.

Mine built almost a year ago but still not finished out. Life got in my way last year. This year should be smoother.

That is a cool shop! Good thing you don't live in a seismic area like I do. One earthquake and everything ends up on the floor and on your car.

Jim - I think you just solved my 16 year old problem of my old go-kart getting in the way on the ground!!
I will move the bikes to the roof, first.
Gotta say - efficient use of space, for sure!

The only shop I have is the one in my mind to be built at my next house...

I recall there being a shop thread long ago but I cannot find it.

I always like hosing around in the garages and shops of old-car guys, as I usually see lots of other cool stuff in addition to the cars.
Antique mowers, bikes - what else you got in there?

Jamesbo - LOTS of stuff in there but so neatly organized!
How long will it take you to find a 3" x 1/2" bolt with matching nut and the tools to spin them with?
I like the rustic appearance of your place...

That's awesome! I actually used to have a '76 Ninety Eight header (same to the Delta aside from the grilles) on a shelf in my room....yes, this was during my single days lol.

One day when I have the garage I really want, I will have awesome wall - (c)art like that again!

Do you have any other parts from that Delta?

Rob, That's easy, all I got to do is go to NAPA buy sum, bring them home, and there be a pile allready there............. when I start to put them in the proper place.

Just the hubcaps hanging up there, my friends dad, who worked at Olds final assembly for 45 years, never sold anything' bought the car new, and drove it till the wheels fell off it, put it in his garage, and it sat there 5 years, died a few years ago, and tons of his stuff, (Including the 1976 delta) came my way. Just sold the engine trans. together last fall. That header was near perfect so I kept it. The rest of the car was gone.

I wish I had another building for parts - they take up more room than the cars...never fails that something is in your way - and it doesn't help that 50% of them won't move under their own power...

Ha! ...my Toro and 92 supreme are in another one too...unfortunately, with the exception of my '71 Convertible, all the work they all need will likely take me through retirement!! My parts are probably worth more than the cars they're set aside for

I just scored a deal on the best shop tool ever and tried them out last night. I got a like new pair of Gojaks. I will never have to drag a car sideways with a jack again. In less than a minute I had a full size truck off the ground and moved the back over 5 feet with about the same effort as moving a kitchen chair.

Olds Dad and others,
How big are your shops? I cruise on garagejournal all the time but it's nice to see how our Olds' fit into a shop with parts storage and such. I hope to build a shop at our next house.

Mine is 42 x 50 that replaced my way too small 36 x 24. Once I finally move in all my fabrication equipment and tools the 42 x 50 will be small too. HAHA

I would suggest thinking about resale, if your a packrat (like me), and if you have room for a shed for lawn stuff, etc.
I built mine with an extra long 3rd bay so I could store bicycles, lawn stuff etc. Even had an extra wide access man door to safely remove those items. Then changed my mind. The long bay is only long enough for 2 small cars not one Cutlass and a small car.
I put the shop in my front yard because of wetland/wildlife sanctuary issues in the backyard. Heck I and my wife figured we would never move again. Now Arizona is calling our names(in a # of years) so we may get to contend with selling a weird looking house with a weird looking shop in the front yard. Such is life. I made mine 1200 sq.ft. I resisted the urge to go bigger but I knew myself and I'd fill whatever size I had. So I went conservative. Next I plan to build a 10x20 shed, to help keep the shop tidy.
Good luck whatever you decide!

A few photos of my man castle. It is like a car, it will never be finished and it will never be big enough.

It is 50 by 35 with poured concrete walls. I took out a retaining wall and dug out in the back yard and poured the walls. Now I have less grass to cut. I will have to post some inside pictures when I get a few down loaded. I built a man room and i installed a lift. Lots of shelving but still not big enough.

Mine is 26 x 44 - Used full attic trusses 8:12 pitch to give me full 2nd story storage. With the staircase in the back, I have room for 4 cars with a little work area near / under the stairs. No columns anywhere

my foundation walls are ~2' off grade, with 8' walls gives me 10' ceilings. I had height restrictions in my neighborhood or I would have gone 12' ceilings.

My biggest regret is using 7' high doors - should have gone 8'.
