Shifter Cable questions
I bought a shifter cable on ebay for a 69-72 cutlass, but the holes are too small on the cable it self
Shifter Cable A -in this picture I can't slide hole over the the rod for the cable -qstn can I buy another rod or not sure name of the part
Shifter Cable B - I cant get the trunnion_part in the hole - so for the trunnion part Can I buy another part_trunnion with a smaller diameter
Or I could take the trunnion & the rod to shifter shave that down a bit...advice please

Are those different cables? As in they neither one fits correctly?
Do you have a way to measure the diameter of the holes in the cable and the diameter of the rods to see how much they are off?

Ok the shorter cable is the one I removed from my cutlass
the longer one is the one I bought on ebay
Not too concern with the length...or should I be
Im off about less than 1/16... Its a hairline
the trunnion is a 1/4" and the rod to shifter cable

Got it !!!!
Hey Kenneth Im good thank you for your help as always,
I figured what I am going to do, I dont want to drill out hole on Shifter Cable - I don't want to weaken the metal or holes.
I am going to shave a bit off the rod to shifter lever and shave off the trunnion, I feel confident that fix will work and have me back on the road by saturday...Unless I get off work now...lol
anyways Thanks again

I got one from the parts place that had the same problem. I took a drill and drilled out the hole some. it was close and a little shaving made it fit. Both ends needed modified. Just did this mod last weekend.

I don't think I have one to measure
but in the photo I see two very different sheaths
the cable has an outer sheath that holds still and guides the moving inner core. The outer sheath must be well affixed at each end. It goes around corners and whatnot of course which is why we use cables. But, it can't be too short for obvious reasons, and if too long, the excess has to go somewhere. In your case I see a used broken cable about oh 18" from one sheath anchor to the other, and a new one about oh 4" longer... therefore the new one would have a serious bow if crammed into the place the old one was in. I think it would work poorly and not last long.
If you do get one that fits, then lube it well inside with say spray grease or spray chain lube or similar before installing.
can you share the epay ad link or seller name or something?
part number off its pkg perhaps? UPC code?
Rock Auto is useless here, no cable listed, if you search it directs you to a 91 cent SEAL. Yeah, same thing, sure.

No size listed. Too much hassle I guess to list the one or two critical fitment features.
Google "gm cable for sale 407409" turns up many interesting items.
gmpartsdirect.com - "407409 has been discontinued from GM"
NOS ones at The Parts Place, somewhat more $ but NOS in correct.

Remove the console, shifter and the cable will be exposed. Raise the vehicle to access underneath. Remove the old, install the new. Adjust, check shifting in all gears. Lower and replace the console.Good luck.

With tranny in neutral and shifter in neutral. Attach the cable and adjust so both the shifter and tranny eyelets are attached. Slip washer and cotter pin in at the shifter not to spread the cotter pin yet. Now shift into park and slid under the car. Pull the eyelet off the pin at tranny, checking the transmission linkage by wiggling to check that tranny is actually in park if so slide in the cotter pin. If not adjust the cable to align eyelet with pin. When there, drop in the cotter pin. Climb back up and shift into 1st, go under and do the same procedure as you did when checking for park. After that, you'll have to run through the gears. I suggest driving the car and shifting it yourself making sure you can shift into park and downshift to 1st. If all good install washers spread cotter pins install console. Good luck this should help.
