Second broken trans cable in two years.

3-speed manual valve body with hurst shifter.
Twice now while driving I’ve lost all ability to shift from the cabin due to a broken steal cable. It’s fun having to limp home in third gear. They’re also not so fun to replace.

Any my ideas as to why they keep failing? They seem to fail 8” from the trans connection inside the protective cable. Too hot? Is there supposed to be a ground strap on the trans also? Can’t find one.

Any my thoughts would be tremendously helpful.

If you don't have a good ground between the engine & body, they will ground through the shift cable and weaken them.

Too tight a bend, the less bends the better. Sounds like you have the wrong length cable.

Heat can melt the cable both inside and out so keep cool air around it if possible. Stay away from headers or exhaust.
You can always put the gear selector where you want it for the ride home. Just reach under there and move it. Unless it's a reverse valve body counter-clockewise will go toward Park

X2 on the grounds. Imperative on a negative ground system which is approaching 50ish years old.

The battery to block ground, Neg cable secondary pigtail, the starter brace/bracket, the braided grounds from the heads to firewall all need to be clean and present. Otherwise, the ground will seek out the path of least resistance. Choke and trans shift cables are both a classic syndrome of a poor engine ground. Make sure all parts are USA made too. That's another "syndrome."

Thank for the release gents.

Current cable is 5ft. Only larger hurst option is 8ft which seems excessive.

Head to firewall is new braded clean ground strap but I’ll check the others.
