Running rich problem or ???

Well, Im pretty sure or atleast hoping that my carb is either dirty and needs a good cleaning or it is just running way too rich. This morning I tried starting my car and it was ridiculously hard to start, I had to put the gas pedal to the ground and then it fired up and ran unbelievably rough and then just shut itself off, there was a heavy smell of gas and I checked the oil and it smelled of gas pretty badly. Ill try to get a picture up of the carb if that will help, and my motor is a 68 455 from a delta 88 but the carb is after market. Not sure what model # it is all I remember is its an edelbrock. Ill try to get more information after I get off of work.

How long has the car been sitting? Sounds like the float is stuck in the carb. Try this: Take a rubber handled screw driver and gently tap the side of the carb (not the side with the linkage) with the rubber handle. This might jog loose the stuck float.

Hmm I think the float is stuck, but tapping didnt work. It is running so rich that when it cut out the carb shot flames out and melted part of my air cleaner

check the floats and make sure they arent stuck, yet again, and, if u end up digging in that far, it sounds like your needle and seat arent closing ( controlled by the float) and its possible either something is lodged in the needle/seat, which can happen by picking up random stuff from the fuel tank, or even that the float is filled with fuel, rare, but it happened to me with a brand new edelbrock carb, when u remove it, shake it try to hear whether or not it has liquid inside,

If it'll run long enough with the throttle wide open just pump some decent carby cleaner through it. Usually does the trick.

Check your fuel pump, could have gone bad and has dumped fuel into the engine.
