rotted out 67 convertible

would a 100% complete, 100% unmolested original,67 cutlass supreme convertible with air conditioning, every power option available in 67, that has a rotted frame, and would need all new floor and trunk pans, and hasn't been started in 20 years, be worth 3k? i already have 250 bucks into going to look at this car the first time, but the title was screwed up, he has it fixed now and is willing to bring it to me(3 hours one way), but im on the fence about buying it now. i know it's ultimately my decision, just looking for some opinions.

Well, it depends on how bad you want to save the car. It sounds like a parts car to me, but if the options and usable parts are worth the $3 thousand then find a solid car to swap the parts over to.

i guess that is the real question, are the parts worth 3k? i'm not really interested in saving the car after seeing the frame and the floors

I am constantly blown away at what parts sell for on here. Complete power window set-up I would imagine those could be worth a good chunk. Power locks and seats?

power windows, power antenna, power top, cruise control, tilt wheel, no on power seats and locks though. so, maybe not ALL power options. when he hooked up a battery, all the lights came on and 3 of the window motors worked. there isn't a piece of trim missing inside or out. i too am blown away at what people are wanting for this stuff now a days. i've been out of the old car game for 10 years and things have REALLY changed. i sure do wish i wouldn't have sold my last 65. i sold it to the guy as a disassembled project for 1200 and he turned down 3500 today to buy it back. he hasn't done anything to it in the 10 years he's had it either.

Buy it. You can get that back+ parting it. If you want to build a car it's a great car to save another solid dry car. If too far gone it will not be worth it to restore. It has to be really special to fix a rot box.

https://classicoldsmobile.com/forums...rneath-161730/ <--this car is worth 3-5K IMO if 90% of the OEM parts are there.

yea, i'm buying it. one way or another, the parts will serve me well. this car is 100% complete and 100% OEM from the day it was built. i plan on building one so having all of the power options, air conditioning parts all the little **** that adds up is worth 3k, plus, i don't have to spend 7 hours of my time going to get it, he's bringing it to me.

Good call then. 👍

Finding any old parts car is hard enough. Finding a loaded ragtop? You know if you went looking for all those parts you would be paying out the um ears...

If you plan to part the car, the purchase value is half or less than what you think you can sell the parts for. Simply buying a car for $3K because the parts appear to be worth that much doesn't cover you costs to drag it home, disassemble it, or have that cash tied up for the length of time it takes to sell the parts. And then you likely have to pay to have the carcass hauled off. Sorry, but I can't see any world where a rotted hulk is worth $3K unless it has D heads or a 1966 W30 air cleaner in the trunk.

The Tilt is rare in my opinion. I have one in my 67 442 and when I had it rebuilt, the rebuilder who only does GM tilts, told me it was super rare. And worth some $$$

If the car is complete, has all the options you want to add to your project, and you have the room for it, it’s probably worthwhile buying it. It’s not worth 3k in optional parts, but well worth it when you consider the time it would take to track down the individual little parts and pieces, or hoping the seller included EVERYTHING needed. Not to mention having the car there to see how everything is supposed to go together would be a huge help.

I really wish I had room at my house for a couple of parts cars. I hate having to drive to friends houses to get special bolts, clips, or unique parts on these old cars. When I first bought my card there were 6 salvage yards within 25 miles of my house full of old iron. Now, they are all gone.

Yeah right…like THAT ever happens. May as well add a AZ tri-power to the list.

Rusted out

I will add my 2 cents ,
I only purchase the worst car I can find , My current 67 needs a floor pan, trunk pan , lower quarters, rockers and a normal frame patch at drivers frt fender , ( car sat with flat tire for 5 years) ,
I have done over 30 66-67 and this is normal condition I find ,
I enjoy the work more than a finished car, the longest I have had a finished car is 6 weeks

I change out so much on 67s . I usually add led headlights with turn signals around the bulbs and fill in the turn signal hole and paint the whole headlight bezel with Argent silver. This 67 I am going to use one piece frt glass and make a removable hardtop for it. Others I make wide body rear fenders for to fit huge rear tires. I have been building car since I was 16 , I used to build 100 factory correct cars but got tired of a incorrect red drop top betting out a super correct brown post. I then build to order car but people want you to build stupid stuff, so I now build my visions and have no problem selling some for asking prices.
back to our car. 67 frames are easy to get. There is a guy in Texas sells correct convertible frames about 2500. Floor pan with braces and inner rockers attached with free delivery Amazon 750. Trunk pan and trunk drop off with cheap delivery summitracing.com. rockers I get off ebay 65 a side. Labor is what you make of it .
so a 3000 rusty car is a worthwhile investment I could buy better cars to build but there is no fun in that.

thank you. i have found the guy in texas, and the one piece pan on amazon, but summit racing is not showing any trunk pans. can you share a link referencing the trunk pan with the drop off? to order the floor pan through jegs is the exact same price, but ships within 24 hours, amazon said it would be end of march before i got the floor. thanks to the new economy though, the frames are just over 3k now, the floor pan shipped with tax from amazon, or jegs, is 821, the one piece trunk pan is only 475 through OPG, but they want almost 300 bucks for shipping. i'm in KY, they're in Cali, i'm not driving there. lol

Sounds to me like you have good and true Oldsmobile plans for that car. Do the math. Chase this part and shipping. Other part and shipping. Those other parts and shipping.... That car came to you. You won't find another like it. Bet me. Good for you.

thanks. i was 4th or 5th on the call back list, the guy had a bunch of no shows and he actually thanked me for being a man of my word and showing up on time, and when i said i would. if the title was correct the first time, i would have just brought it home myself. worked out great you are right, i would be hard pressed to find another 100% original, unmolested and complete car, with 90% of the options available in a car at that time for 3k. rusted frame or not, something usually has always been changed.

once i bought my first 65 f-85 at the age of 19, i was hooked, olds or nothing for me. i am 80% certain that once the sheriff comes by to do their inspection on the car, and the title is in my name, i am going to start tearing the car down. i am doing my research now on parts and prices. got my notebook ready. the biggest difference for me now, versus 10 years ago when i sold my last 65 convertible, i have the money to buy everything i need and have it sitting here waiting to be put back together. i'm going to try and find a frame that won't cost me 3k, if i can find a used one that's in good shape for 5-800, i will use the rest of the money to buy me a bad *** air compressor, so i can build a sand blasting shed, and a powder coating oven. i already do alloy rim repair for used car lots for a living, i need to add powder coating to my list of services anyway. this car just kick starts my motivation to do so, lots of parts to be coated.

from your experience, what has sold the easiest, a factory correct car, or a slightly modified/upgraded car? for example, would you put disc brakes and upgraded suspension or leave the factory drums? i guess it's a matter of, am i reselling, or keeping.

have you ever fuel injected a 330? i've always had visions of an ls swap, but with a factory air car, maybe a holly fuel injection system for more stable performance over a quadrajet

I don't see the parts at summitracing.com either . But I have bought the 3 piece trunk floor from jegs and it should have free shipping.
as far as selling . I have found that a restored car has a smaller audience. Restomod or whatever you want to call it appears to gain more buyers. I think anyone that is a buyer really wants a safe driver something that they can enjoy. I install 4 wheel disc brakes of everything. . At least a 350 turbo trans if not over drive, a/c from vintage air, a quick ratio jeep steering box, and big frt and rear sway bars to start. I have been using holly snipers along for reliable starts with the adjustable distributor. Dakota digital make a great gauge insert.
parts have taken a super long time to get , I ordered trunk drop off , lower quarter panels and quarter panel patches, I ordered in May of 2021 and have gotten only half the parts so far , just need to have patience
