Right hand rear view mirror

Hey guys. For those of you who put on a passenger side rear view mirror. Is there a special tool to cut the slots? If not how did you cut the slots?
Thanks.

What year/model?

On my '62 there are holes, not slots? I measured carefully and used a drill.

70 cutlass. Yes there are round holes with slots off of those. I think old school name was key hole. Because it resembles old time key holes. I can do the round hole. Just not sure how to cut the slots.

I took a few pictures of the slots I made in the door of my 1970 442. These slots were for the sport mirrors. It has been a while, but I think I just drilled two 5/16" holes and extended the slots with a die grinder. I am sure that it could be done with a combination of flat and round files. The mirror looks to be in the correct position, but I would feel better if someone also had some dimensions to verify (before you cut on the door). Also, I believe a company such as Inline Tube sells a piece of metal for reinforcement on the backside of the door, although I have not yet used one and I have had no problems. I hope that this info. helps. Good luck with your project!

Re: measurements- The 14 3/4" measurement is taken at the top edge of the blue horizontal tape (along the body line). The measurement that is 1 1/4" down is from the top door body line/edge (not from the innermost top, where the weatherstrip attaches).

Thank you for the pictures. I was going to make a template. I like your version better. I was going to try a round file. Plus I have some attachments for my dremmel I. Was going to try too. I was just making sure someone hasn't made it simple first.

Scans of mirror template

I have a an original template that I scanned to PDF files (two pages) if you would like I can email them to you...I will attach them here and you can decide if I need to email them. I used this template for a passenger side mirror on my 68 and am going to use for my Sport Mirrors on my F85 someday.

Got this meesage when trying to add files
