Replacing fuel pump on 70-442
I was told to place some grease/lubricant on the arm of the fuel pump prior to installing. Just curious why this is important and do you lube the outside of the "arm" only or should you also lubricate the inside of the inner channel of arm or bracket prior to install? thanks in advance
I suppose the grease is to ensure there is lubrication on the area where the pump arm rides on the eccentric mounted to the front of the cam gear at startup, before the oil pump can push oil to that area. I have never used grease as firing the engine the first time after installing a new pump is about the same as every other time the engine is started in that it will take a bit for the oil to get there.
Not to mention the oil galley plug on the side of the camshaft has a small orifice. As soon as the engine starts, oil hits the back of the timing gear and is sprayed everywhere.
A little assembly lube on the fuel pump eccentric is a good idea on a fresh build. Once the engine has been run, it really won’t matter. But won’t hurt if you do add some oil or assembly lube.

I always wipe a little grease on the fuel pump arm where it rides on the eccentric at the front of the cam. The weep hole doesn't spray a lot of oil, and why take the chance of a dry start generating even a few metal filings? Cheap insurance.
