I have never taken the cover lid off. Need to change the bulb. so how does that cover come off? I just don't want ot mess it up.

Look on the sides and you'll see a couple of small dimples in the cover. Those are what holds it onto the base with a friction fit. It should pop right off. You may have to twist it a bit to get it loose.
