Removing Hurst Shifter Arm from Shifter

I did this years ago with a feeler gauge but can't remember specifically what I did. I vaguely recall doing it on just one side with the feeler gauge. Can someone provide a refresher for me, please?

Thanks!

Slide an 020 or so feeler gauge down next to the shift handle to release the detent ball. Once the feeler gauge is in place, and the detent released, pull straight up.

Much appreciated. Just on one side or both?

Driver's side of the chrome handle has the detent notch/depression.....it can be a struggle.

I just performed this procedure yesterday using .015” feeler gauge on the passenger side. If the Hurst lever has been in the receiver a long time, use some lube. You may need to hold the receiver in a vise if it is out of the vehicle. Also, some of the Hurst rebuild kits put the retaining pawls on both sides. I would start with the gauge on the passenger side.

One other hint is that it can sometimes be helpful to push in (down) on the stick while you insert the feeler gauge. The tang can dig into the recess in the stick and this can prevent the feeler gauge from fully releasing the tang. FYI, this also applies to removing the female Packard 56 terminals from the connector bodies.
