Removal of the emission equipment

Removal of the emission equipment
On my 83 H/O a previous owner has removed all the emission parts from the engine. My problem is I'm trying to get this car back to being as correct as possible. What I'm working on now is getting the air conditioning working. The problem is that when the compressor kicks on there isn't anything to compensate for the extra drag on the engine and it pulls it way down to where it tries to die. If I set the idle up where it runs with the air on then it idles way to fast the rest of the time. I'm guessing there used to be a vacuum control the was mounted on the carb. to handle this situation. Can anyone help me with this problem. Thanks Larry

The AC cars had a fast idle solenoid that increased the idle when the AC was turned on, Electoral unit that bolts to the left side of carb, green wire plugs into it, maybe someone has a photo of one, good luck.
PS. I will look tomorrow I may have one, no lights in shed or I would look tonight.

Or, to place it in context, How good an idea is it to buy a car from the kind of an idiot who removes the fast idle solenoid from a computer-controlled car, along with all of the emissions equipment, without regard to function?
Good luck with that car - Heaven knows what else you'll find messed with!
And welcome to ClassicOlds.

So far just the emission stuff and an aftermarket radio is all that I have found messed with. Reason I got the car is it has 56000 miles on the vehicle and I can trace it back thru every owner since new. I'm the fifth owner. The car has the original black paint and no rust. Just needed some tlc. Afaid to ask anymore questions for fear I'll be called an idiot for buying the car. The one I need Toymobile is the one that fastens to the side of the carb with 2 screws. Thanks for trying to protect me there. Larry

Not at all, but indiscriminate removal of everything that looks like a tube or a hose is a classic idiot move, from the seventies to today.
It sounds like you've got a good car there, and it was worth buying it, in spite of the idiots.
The guy who seems to me to know the most about the emissions equipment on these years is Joe_Padovano - I'd ask him what to reconstruct.

Like I said, talk to Joe. I know exactly Zero about these years' emission controls, but he does know them, and I've seen him explain them in these pages. Unless important parts like the carb and the distributor have been changed, it may run better with the emission controls than without them.

I think the carb has been changed along with putting on an Edlebrock Performer manifold. Don't know about dist. The carb no. is 17084287 which according to my repair manual it is off an 84 olds of some kind. Maybe someone can tell me for sure.
