Redneck engine hoist/vehicle abuse. ;)

So I had to lift a short block olds out of a '69 Cutlass supreme that is about done & I had no help of course. So I improvised & got it done. Ran a 2x8? across the rear doors of my work van & threw a 2x4 on top for good measure & then secured a chain them. Then used a comealong to hoist it up & slid the wood towards the front of the doors & lowered the engine into my awaiting van. Didn't know if the doors/hinges/wood would take the load, but everything worked as hoped & no blood was shed or bones broken.
What surprised me was that the doors still open & shut just fine. Who knew?

Tony,
Kind of, but it kicks more butt!! Basically a ratchet strap but braided steel wire instead of cloth & long handle to crank it instead of short one. Hook one end to something strong & the other hook to something that you want to "come a long". Crank the handle back & forth & it either comes a long or something breaks. Cool either way!

Interesting, but I just bought an engine picker. If you do get an engine picker, get a good one, as some of the bargain jobs don't have very long booms. Pickers come in handy for lots of things aroung the house, as used it to yank old shrubs around the house. Mine comes apart, so can get it up from the basement myself.

I have a real engine hoist, but it was at a friends house & I had no time to go get it. I thought of doing this during the night, seems my brain won't turn off at times...
