I remember reading somewhere on CO about rebuilding Olds 350's and instead of using the rope seal for the rear main seal a "Ford" seal is used. Can anyone clarify this?

 

I know that you can use a ford 460 rear main on a 455 not sure with 350

There are two seals that will work for the small block.

Some say that the AMC seal fits a bit better, but it has two "wings" that have to be cut off before you use it.

They are:

Jeep / AMC / International 6 cylinder -
196, 199, 232, and 258 cid
# RM 13879 or FelPro # BS13879

Ford "Y-Block" V8 -
239, 256, 272, and 292 cid, but NOT 312 or 390
FelPro # BS6141

 

I prefer to use Victor JV748 and it is also listed specific for the 350 olds.

Victor Reinz JV748 rear seal which is equvalent to Felpro Part number BS6141 on my 350.

Know for one thing, a Ford 460 rear main neoprene rear seal works fine for a 455 Olds, as used them several times. One thing you've gotta be careful of though, is many rear rope seal crankshafts have oiling gashes machinined into them a few thousands, that need to be be machined or sanded off, before installing neoprene rear mains, or will leak worse than ever.
