Raised White Letter Tires

Raised White Letter Tires
I have heard a few ideas on cleaning and making the raised white letters on tires look pearly white. I have seen some photo albums on Classic Olds with very white letters.
I have used Westleys Blech White with some success and also the wet dry 400? Grit sandpaper with some success. My problem is that as soon as you clean the tire and you overlap onto the letters, they get dirty again.
Would love some tips to get the raised white letters pearly white and tires looking like new.
Thanks, Billy

Years ago, we always used a wire brush to clean the lettering. I understand what you are saying though. My advice, after cleaning and detailing the tires, try a magic eraser on the lettering. I know it works like magic (pun intended) on cleaning my white interior and door panels.

If you are using any kind of tire shine, it will quickly bleed onto the white letters and make them dirty. Personally, I don't like the tire dressings. Rubber tires were never shiny. I use Westley's on the whole tire and they stay clean for extended periods.

Just took a picture of one of my tires. Just so you know, I haven't washed or cleaned the tires since July 11. I drove it 500 miles on an antique car tour, through some driving rain storms and on some dirt roads. Since then, I have driven it 2-300 miles around town, also through some frequent rain in south Florida. Neither the car or the tires look dirty. Perfect? No but the point is they stay clean.

Tire wet is a silly product. Westley's bleach white and a fine wire brush is all you need. Wash the car, wash the wheels and the tires, then do the bleach white (spray on all four tires, then go back and brush then hose each in order) while car is still wet. Then dry the car.

Lacquer thinner on the letters only after the tires have been cleaned with comet or bleache white. I have used lacquer thinner on letters that were pretty bad and they cleaned up nicely but only a little bit on the rag and use one finger to clean the letter keeping a clean spot on the rag for each letter. It has worked for me your results may vary.

I used oven cleaner to strip the paint off my SSIII wheels when I was refinishing them. I am surprised that those using it to clean the tires don't have issues with staining the paint on the wheels.

I am having a bit of trouble finding something similar to Comet.
Thanks,

Before you go crazy looking for other cleaners try the SOS or Brillo pads. You could first treat the rubber then use the pad just on the letters. If they are not to bad you might get away with just one for all 4 tires but chances are you will need 2.
