Radiator Codes
Radiator Codes
Hello All,
Does anyone how to decode the codes on a radiator tag?
I have a 1971 442 4-speed.
FYI - the radiator builder soldered the automatic transmission lines closed, so some of the codes may relate to that.
Thanks for any help!!
Brad

Depends on the options on the car I think:
>If you have AC and/or HD cooling....then the tag should have "ZK" as the main letter code as well as "IF" and "OW" as the tank codes. D side tank will have "IF" in it in small raised letters and the filler side tank would have "OW" in large raised letters. The tag is clipped onto the P side tank seam.
>It should have the trans cooler and threaded holes for that...factory just installed threaded plugs in the two holes for 4 spd cars.
Not sure if a "plain jane" '71 (ie - no AC, no HD cooling) would have come with a 3 row radiator or not.
What options does your car have??
Does it have an original water pump on it? This might give you a clue to the radiator itself as a large inlet on the water pump may indicate the large (ie - 4 row) radiator with the larger lower P side hose connection.

11971442 is probably correct if your car does not have A/C or HD cooling option. The SS code is really a common radiator as that is what would be in any 71 350 Cutlass with A/C. It has other applications also.
Search some of my threads here as I researched this.

capstone - AC would have required a 4 row in 1970 so your tag would contain:
>"EC" for the two large letters on THE TAG. Tag would also show the tank codes - "CI" and "IF" with CI being the P side/filler side tank and IF being the D side tank. If legible the tag will also have a PN stamped on it ...... 3014707
I guess the car could have also had a "ED" tag w/PN 3017108 stamped on the tag. Not sure what tanks/tank codes would appear on this tag. This tag configuration is shown in the Assembly Manual for a Y72 "Heavy Duty Cooling" option. Not sure how it differs from the AC 4400 series 4 row radiator (EC radiator).
Also - IMO the rad will have the auto trans cooler w/the threaded inlet and outlet (with plugs).

My build sheet shows that the radiator I'm supposed to have is an "OG" can someone tell me if this is a 3 row or 4 row? I do have AC from the factory.
The radiator that came with car is a aftermarket all aluminum racing style.

Tony - If you have the original radiator support and/or radiator top plate in your car you can just look at the metal "saddles" that hold the radiator. If they are the 4 row style then the car likely came with a 4 row rad. If 3 row length/width then 3 row. If you post some good pics of the radiator saddles then it might help.
May not be 100% conclusive but will provide some clues. I have seen an Olds with 4 row saddles but a 3 row radiator AND the radiator itself had a 4 row style P side/filler side tank and a narrower 3 row style D side tank. The "extra" space in the D side saddles was taken up with factory rubber isolators that had a shorter channel molded into them for the 3 row end tank. I'm thinking this may have been the "HD 3 row radiator" for this car's year model.

Well I bought the 4 row insulators and they do not fit and what I have is the stock saddles. So it sounds like I have or should have a 3 row. I am still going to stay with the radiator I got with the car because it is fairly new and should cool it. I just have to find the right insulators for it.
Anyone looking for 4 row insulators?

ollies rad
Ollie
told me car was manual trans from factory
still had this tiny trans cooler in the tank ???
3row both sides
Ollies tanks need a good / new home
Thanks
I should get this junk back to the garage before warden gets home

Farm boy says cut the rubber gizmo in half / middle
shorten to fit you
Thanks Everyone, Here are some more details. No AC, no PS, no PB, 3.42 rear gear, M22 trans. This is a 3-core radiator with shroud installed. This may be incorrect, since 4-speed cars with a 455 and 3.42 gear came with 3-core radiators and a top plate without a shroud. Also, the car had the trans line plugs in it before the radiator shop soldered them up.
On another note, I have seen the 4-core rubber saddles that had one end thicker than the other to allow a 3-core to fit.

This is odd. The passenger side tank has a little tag that says 11545 Campbell Radiator. The drivers tank says IA. The tag says SS in large protruding stamped letters and IA CF 30 in recessed letters.
I do not see a CF, or any digits other than the little tag, on the passenger tank. I do not know the history of this radiator, I bought it as a core.

Patton, I've found the two different sized tanks on several full sized cars. But they had codes specific to the Toronado or Delta 88.
Question: did the “CH” tanks make it into early 1970 production for the 442? I have a “CH” and an “IF” tanked 4-core for an auto with air 442 vert that was supposedly OEM to this car, which was built in early production for ‘70. Many though quote that the correct tank is a “CI” coded tank. Kindly advise on any wisdom. Thanks so much.
