R12 is hard to get these days. You can sometimes find it at garage sales. It is all over ebay but you need to have someone with a license buy it. I have a little over 30 lbs stashed away and should last the rest of my life. The price of it should be coming down though. There is so few people that need it any more that it is not that easy to sell. Classic car guys are the only people that use it today.

Do a search on R152A. Lots of people are having good results in old systems and it's dirt cheap.

I am in refrigeration and I would highly advise against it. Not going to get into the reasons why here but it is not a good idea.

you can get it at costco, or any tool supply company, but you need a certain class license (father in law is refridge tech)

its still widely used in freezers.
