R12 in D/FW??

Am moving to Atlanta, would like to recharge my AC system before I leave and don't feel like hassling with a 134 conversion. Anyone have any "just sitting around?"

That is going to be quite expensive. When I converted my 91 Buick Estate Wagon from R12 to R134a about 10 years ago it was expensive. Good luck on your search. I would think that R12 would be as rare as a hen's tooth now.

If you want to come Austin way,
I have 2 lbs. of freeze 12.
I have the tool to put it in as well.
I really don't care what anyone says
about this stuff. It works.

Good luck with the move, just checked,
3:59 Fri; it's 97.3 here in Marble. HOT!
Let me know, Adam.

Last I heard there was a lot left because so many shops convinced people to convert to R134A instead of refilling with R-12 in the years after the R-12 ban. Long ago R-12 was going for $50 a can or more, then the price came down as the demand dropped.

Amen..

Sometimes you can get cases or even jugs of it. Keep your eyes peeled! Get pure R12 only - with no sealers or additives.
Also I would shy away from freeze 12, as it is not the same chemical. I have seen it cause system failures later on when used on an unconverted R12 system..

You should be able to find a shop who will put it in. Many wont since they cannot mark up the R12, but some say labor is better than nothing!

That is interesting information. I would have never thought that you could come by R12 easily these days. Of course, I have a small can in my garage that has a K-Mart logo and price sticker on it. I think it has a price of $1.20 or something. I don't know why I have it, I don't even have a set of R12 manifold gauges.

I found some on CL...would prefer to put $$$ into a CO member's hands to put it in as opposed to enriching a shop @ shop rate...soon as I sell this furniture I will need to do this and roll out.

Perhaps you can find a bachelor CO member, who has a fully outfitted garage, but sleeps on the floor, who will trade you the work for your furniture .

Most members (myself included) have their own stash of the stuff, but need it for our own cars. I am reminded of this whenever I run out of space in the fridge or freezer...

Found it for $15/can 12oz size...figure I need at least one. AC only shows "low refrigerant" when ambient temps are 75° or below...

That's a fair price, considering that 134 is going for $14 a can now.

I'd get a few, as you never know how much the system will take, and you never know when you might hit a "dry spell."

I have 10 12oz. cans but it's not for sale, sorry. I usually buy it at garage sales when I run across it. It won't keep for ever, I've had a few of my garage sale finds spring leaks where the bottom is seamed to the sides of the can. I had 3 empties when I packed up my garage for a move.

This is the reason I store mine in the freezer. Low temps = less pressure inside the can and dryness = less condensation on the can and lower chance of rim rustout.
Cold storage certainly prolongs the can's life but of course will not keep it forever.

That would go over just great with my wife. Rob, you're not married, correct?

What an educated WAG - you are right!

The married guys could always put it in their beer fridge out in the garage or shop tho...

The married guys could lay down the law and tell their wives that there was gonna be R12 in the freezer, and that's just the was it's gonna be.

[I hope my wife doesn't see that I posted this... ]

Okay , this actually just happened. Wife came home from the grocery store and after I brought the last load in from the car, I found both the Patron and the Tito's sitting on the counter and heard the announcement that there was no room in the freezer for the bottles. I'd put them in the "little" fridge that holds other liquid refreshments but the bottles are too big. I can't even keep the alcohol cold, how am I gonna cram the R12 in there?
