question about cutting console for dual gate shifter

i have not installed a duel gate shifter for many years and have never cut a console to be a duel gate console. should i have to cut this area for the back bracket to fit? if not what am i doing wrong? the shifter fits great with this bracket off and this bracket would fit perfect if this was cut. i just never seen one for so many years i can't remember. i have never heard of this having to be cut. maybe the bracket is the wrong one?

Eric, is that a factory bracket or a repop? About 15 years ago I pulled a dual gate setup from a 1972 Cutlass Supreme. Attached are pictures of that unit. It's attached to the shifter in a different location, skewed at an angle, and the bracket is tapered. It's 3" wide at the rear then 2 13/16" wide just where it makes the bend. If everything else looks good, I'd trim the console just a little. But I'm hoping these pictures will help you troubleshoot it. Let me know if there's any other measurements or picture views that might help. John

thanks john, this came out of a 69 that had sit for many years and somebody made a failed attempt to put a 70 to 72 shifter and console in it. they destroyed the console so i am cutting another one for the shifter. the old console has this entire area busted out. i would think this is an original part from as long as the car had sit. mine is tapered also and if i cut the console it will mount at just a slight angle but would line up perfect. i may get one of my junk bottom sections and cut it to test it before i cut a good one.

i cut it and it fits perfect. i had to use the bottom from my 4 speed console because it is going in my rallye for now.(it is/was a 4 speed car) i will put all the original 4 speed stuff back in some day. i didn't really want to cut my 4 speed bottom but you will never know it till somebody takes it out of the car. now to see how it will fit with the 4 speed hump. my test fitting was showing me that it will just fit but the front dual gate bracket will be close. i will keep my fingers crossed.
