Production/VIN questions

Hey guys. Thanks in advance for any help you can offer.

I'm looking at a 1972 "K" code notchback. 65k documented miles. Beautiful car. I'm confused because this car is completely set up as a Hurst Olds. (455, Dual Gate, suspension, etc) Exterior is your average Supreme. Rally wheels, full vinyl top, standard bumpers and hood. Current owner has had the car 6 years and put about 2k miles on it and purchased from original owner who stated this was from the factory.

Can anyone give me any opinion on how/if this is even possible to have a 455 non-U? Has anyone ever heard of this? I'm of the opinion if it walks like a duck and quacks like a duck...it's probably a duck. In other words, it's not original.

Quack!
You're right on the money. Although ALL 72 HO's were based on the 4257 and 4267 platforms, all HO's were 455 BBO. Obviously someone has done some cosmetic work and wants to portray it as an HO. U code or X code for the engines. All HO's were originally built at Lansing before shipping to Hurst for mods.

Can anyone give me any opinion on how/if this is even possible to have a 455 non-U?
Sure. The W30 engine was an option for the HO in 72. That's an X code 455.

There were 499 HO CS hardtops built in 1972 - 220 of them had factory sunroofs.

Obviously, that is not the original engine, as a "K" indicates a 350. Obviously, it isn't a real H/O either. If you need further proof, check the VIN derivative on the block - it won't match the VIN of the car.
