Practice makes a 500

Now let me begin by saying I have always been a 1/4 mile guy, and never much of a dizzy (drive in circles) type guy.

However, this past Monday the family and I stopped by Indianapolis. It was one of those, we are passing through, why not? At least we can see museum. Well, the rain held off and low and behold the racers started running practice runs. Now let me say, watching a car zip by at 225 mph captured my attention. It was indeed impressive to say the least. Then a slight rain delay, and then several of the cars were running practice at the same time. A few car passing others on the straightaway, even. Way Cool!!

It is one of those TV doesn't do it justice. It is not even close.

It was such a need experience, just thought I would share.

They don't call it the greatest spectacle in motor racing for nothing......

I've lived here my whole life & have only been to one 500 race. I've been to several Brickyard 400 races though & both are amazing to see in person for sure. The museum is a good place to visit also.

I enjoyed watching the odd race on TV mainly because it was like golf to me, good snoozing material. I attended my first race in Vegas last Feb and discovered it was quite thrilling to see 25 cars go by at 200 MPH in person. Indy must be pretty exciting.

I must admit I was a little gitty. In the museum there was a car, or at least the frame and drive train ( I cannot remember the name of it, and I forgot to take a pic ) from around 1911, that was 953 ci. Valve train and bottom end were external, you could see the cam rocker arms valve springs, and crank and the lower part of the rods. Now the funny part was that it had roller rockers, at least on the cam side. They looked like those little paint rollers. 100 years ago they had rollers.

Family had a great time even the Mrs and my daughter enjoyed the practice runs, my son was set as he is into open wheel cars, and for me it was like seeing continuous drag races every 1/2 seconds.

Oh yeah, we were setting close to start/ finish line and who is in the pits ??? Mario.

I had been NASCAR fan for years but had never been to an actual race. Finally in 97 went to the inaugural here at Texas and was blown away. There is no way to describe to someone who has never been how awe inspiring it is in person, with the Indy type cars even more impressive.

I had the privilege of speaking with the Indy track historian at the HOCA dinner last year. Very pleasant, sharp man. I asked about the turbine cars. He told a good story.

I haven't been to Indy or a NASCAR event, but I feel the same way about Top Fuel. If you've never seen, heard, smelled, tasted, and felt it in person from 30 feet away, you have no idea how cool it is. There's nothing normal about any of this. I think the sense of feeling is the best; you feel each cylinder fire and the wall of heat.

Got to drive on the track on the Hot Rod Power Tour a couple years ago. It was amazing.
