powersteering

I removed a power steering unit from a 1954 Olds. out in the engine compartment a #16 wire come out of the steering sector it came from up in the area of the steering wheel it wasn't hooked to anything the motor has been removed does anybody know where this wire goes to. Geno.

If by the sector you are talking about the gearbox and shaft that goes up to the steering wheel, then there are no wires involved. If it is the part with the turn signals in it, that is another story. If this is not clear, post a picture.

Actually, that's "Horn wire, yes".

I'm guessing that the OP has not previously worked on an old car steering column from before the advent of slip rings. The horn button was simply connected to this wire, and the wire allowed to twist right and left as you turned the wheel. Since the column was bolted to the steering box, the wire simply came out the bottom of the steering gear and connected to the horn. Of course, once steering columns got flex joints and collapsing sections, this wasn't feasible anymore.
