Power steering filter.

Hi , anybody who using inline filter to the power steering return line ? Replacing the pressure hose now and
seen the oil looks dirty fast. Same in my Saginaw pump in the GMC , that canister had a magneto to the wall of
the canister.

My 86 Ford F250 has a 6.9l IDI diesel and it has an OE power steering cooler. I've never heard of installing a filter in the low pressure power steering hose. 🤔

In over half a century of driving GM vehicles, I've never used nor felt the need for a PS filter. Sounds like a product trying to create a market. And frankly, I'd be concerned that any filter fine enough to catch particles that matter is probably a restriction in the system that can reduce flow.

Never heard of somebody using PS filter here in Sweden either , maybe change the fluid sometimes instead.

I had a Mercedes W123 wagon that had a power steering filter. Changed it once in the short time I owned the car, don't know if it did any good. But, you know, it was a Mercedes.

Yes Mike , the ps fluid looked bad so if a filter catch
particels instead of these going around in the system the whole time is a good thing.

Have worked a little with hydraulic system in the industri and clean oil in the system is important.

Had several W123 and W124 Benz's, all had filters from the factory and they would catch debris. Are they necessary? Maybe, maybe not. Haven't seen them in any other vehicles, has anyone else?

Can you better describe how quickly you're noticing the PS fluid get 'dirty'? What are you actually seeing in the fluid that makes it dirty (i.e. change in color, actual shavings or debris on the pump canister magnet, etc.) ?

What kind of fluid are you using, how old are the gearbox and pump? Are you getting any PS system noise?

Could be a number of variables here in play to account for what you're seeing, and/or be suggesting time for an equipment replacement beyond just the hoses rather than an external filter.

The Saginaw pump in my GMC was leaking so i had it apart and there was a lot of particles on the magneto
and the canister walls need also to be cleaned to before mounting together , but the fluid was not so dark probaly
to the leaking for a while and refilling with atf fluid. Don´t know how often the previos owner changed oil.

When i took off the hoses of the Olds pump now the oil was dark and the car have not run so much since i changed
the oil last time , have no idea how it look inside the pump canister , but ps works fine now.

I had to replace the PS pump in my 88 because it siezed up so bad that the belt jumped. The canister
needed to be cleaned inside at the same time , so that,s why i was thinking on a filter for saving pump
and steeringbox to maybe last longer.

Using Dexron III in all PS and automatic transmissions , no noise in the PS system for now.

I dunno - I'd flush the whole system out and refill with a good synthetic PS-specific fluid..
