Pilot Bearing

Pilot Bearing

Changing my clutch on my 70 W30. I thought the 455 had the bearing sit in the crank far enough, that there was a keeper snap ring to help hold it in. Mine was flush with the crank, and when I took it out, there was a lip than keep it from going in any farther, and also no slot for a keeper. Did Olds make two different designs?

This has been discussed before. The early cranks use peening with a centerpunch to hold the bearing (blue Loctite could help), and later ones use a snap ring. Had you done a search you would have found several threads including this one:
