Painted Top

Was it possible in 1970 to order a Cutlass 2 door/442 with a top painted differently from the lower body color ? For example, could you order a ‘70 442 Holiday Coupe in Sherwood Green with a painted white top ?

Attached are the recommended exterior and interior color combinations for 1970.

RPO D99, a $31.07 option for 1970. The cowl tag will tell you if the car had a painted or vinyl top. The second entry in the paint code will be a letter if it's a vinyl top or a two digit number if it's a painted top.

A friend bumped into an older gentleman in North Carolina who was showing his car. Said he was the original owner, ordered the car with a painted white top, 19,000 original miles. These are the only pictures - no trim tag pictures.

Ever see a ‘70 W-30 with a painted white top ?

Wowzer....too bad we don't have more pics. That car would be a time capsule.

My first '68 was a Cutlass S, not a 4-4-2, if that makes a difference in this discussion. It was Gold Jade body with white painted top from the factory, and had the vinyl top trim around it.

RPO D99 was available on every model of Oldsmobile except the Toro, at least through the 1972 model year. Yes, even the wagons and Ninety Eights could be ordered in two-tone.

It sure was possible; I own one, '70 442 Holiday Coupe in sherwood green with a white painted roof, and 18,000 original miles. My car was originally purchased in Vernal, Utah and the original owner told me all of the 442's on the dealer lot had a white painted roof. The theory was the white painted roof would keep the car cooler; my car does not have air conditioning. If I remember correctly the trim tag shows 48 10.

Unusual and unique cars - must be cool to see in person. You just don’t see that many of them in person - if at all. I wonder if the owners of those cars that were restored/repainted decided to go with one solid body color or even add a vinyl top in some instances.
