Ordering parts that dont exist?
Story is that im looking for a new water pump for my 62 f85's orig 215 v8. so i find a listing on Summit racing for a remanned pump part #AAZ-58-108. the pump comes from.a company called Cardone, part # 58-108. Now, i like to call parts companies direct and speak with a human whenever possible to ensure the application is correct and the part actually exists.
Low and behold the woman tells me the part is not in stock and is on back order until may 14th from cardone. she then asks if id like to purchase the part anyway for $51+ship and ill most likely recieve it 2 business weeks from the backorder date. Being inquisitive i called Cardone direct and their customer service rep told me that the cores are very difficult to find and that they havent had one of those particular cores in years and probably wont locate any anytime soon (as in ever!).
Therefore, if i had ordered the part from summit, they would have just gave me the run around in 3 months about not getting the part and i woud've only wasted a bunch of time only in the end to (hopefully) get a refund for a part that didnt exist and would never materialize. now im stuck with a crappy original pump not worthy of rebuild and almost got duped into ordering a non-existent part.
SO my real question is, where can i find this pump for the 215 v8?? (no luck on ebay or any other parts sites, help!)

rockauto says the same thing about a new pump, but they can rebuild mine. its pretty shot though so i am still up the creek. its looking like the part doesnt exist unless someone on the site here has one in their possesion!
a shop called Arthur Gould's out in long island say they can rebuild the pump, and have seen some pretty bad cases so mine should be rebuildable. i doubt it though, its pretty heavily calcified for i think the previous owner had been running tap water for a bit. and the hose neck has a splinter on the end so id much much rather find one, even if its old as long as its better than the one i got. i know theres f85 guys on here with these aluminum engines!
Naw man, the pump is pretty nasty lookin i dont have pics right now, its got minerals and the hose neck is rough and missing a piece on the end. im willing to bet the guys at the shop might tell me dont even bother.

wow, it does look exactly alike. im going to do some investigating on that but i think i found one already. idk if the 3 1/2" is right but ill measure the one i have and see. excellent, thank you 70cutty!
However mostly the deciding factor is cost, if it costs more to fix a starter motor on a 2010 Hyundai than the price of a new one what would you do?.
On the other hand, if you have a 1928 Bugatti engine with a cracked block then you either pay whatever it costs to fix it, or that's the end of that engine, and there aren't any more to be bought.
Your water pump is nearer the Hyundai than the Bugatti, a new one is hard to find, but they are obtainable.

I ordered a battery tray for a '71 Cutlass S with 350 last summer, still waiting for it. Although the system showed one or two available "back east" nothing materialized. My parts guy called the supplier and the story goes that they're out of stock and taking back orders; when they get enough back orders the factory will do a run on them and the orders will be filled.
At least I didn't have to put any money down waiting for it.

However the British versions differed in many details, whether any Rover water pumps will fit is debatable.
In fact more 215s were built by Buick and Oldsmobile (and they had different head bolt patterns) than in the whole time they were produced in England.
I think you have more chance of success if you keep searching in North America, shipping won't be nearly as expensive or tricky as importing from overseas.

There are options and companies that specialize in these parts here in US, one of them I provided the link to OP.
Actually a lot of Rover and MGB (it's a popular conversion) owners order from US to keep their 215 on the road.
Rover water pump will not fit as it as a longer nose and pulleys will not align.

well i didnt order the pump. water does come out of the one on the car when i spin it by hand so at least its functioning maybe not like new but it should be working. im also gettin the rad done, i think i know a local place to do it.
i did however order a valley pan gaket kit and thermostat from D&D, seems to know alot about all the versions of this engine. i have to take the manifold off to get at a broken thermostat bolt, hopefully drill a hole in the bolt and extract it. its impossible to get at with a drill so ill pull the manifold. im getting a fair bit of steam from the valve covers which im hoping isnt a head problem maybe manifold gasket leaking coolant when hot and running?
