Oldsmobile “4-4-2” meaning

Everyone on CO knows and loves
4-4-2s, but a question to be answered is what was the original meaning of those magical numbers.

Evolving from the police pursuit B09 option, I have always believed 4 speed 4 barrel carburetor and dual exhausts.

However this guy wrote his thesis at Clemson university on “the classic muscle car era” and describes the 2 as representing posi traction rear. It’s a fun read - and doing more research, I understand others may think this as well

https://tigerprints.clemson.edu/cgi/...ext=all_theses
(Page 18/ 25th overall page)

For me those magical numbers will always mean a four speed four barrel dual exhaust muscle car from Oldsmobile.

Very curious as to what other learned and knowledgeable members on here think...

I honestly can't believe this passes as a thesis. It is not particularly well researched (very few citations to back up claims) and reads more like a high school term paper than something qualifying someone for a masters degree.

As for the 442 comment: no citation for it - it's BS. Citation? Oldsmobile print ad from 1964:

Edit: reading what "Art History" is, the writing style of this thesis makes more sense (though still not my preference for a research paper). I stand by my opinion it is poorly researched and poorly cited.

Clemson should be embarrassed this is considered a thesis. It is written in informal, conversation-style prose. I've written a master's thesis for an engineering degree, and the difference between the two schools of thought is night and day for the same level of degree; it really brings home how some degrees make bank, and other degrees make debt.

There is an auto museum in Rhode Island that has a '69 H/O on display which they are listing as a 442, calling it "four barrel, four speed, two door" . I'm planning to visit the museum during Christmas week to check out the car and talk to them about there interpretation of the name.

No need to be curious. Google and read it for yourself. Get the facts by reading the 1964 Oldsmobile 4-4-2 ad. Then read the 1965 Oldsmobile 4-4-2 ad.
