Olds Tissue Dispenser & Trash Bin ..... ID & Rarity ?.
On today's episode of ThePackRat's files .....
An Olds tissue dispenser trash bin combo.
Anyone know what years (s) this was available ?.
Are these rare ?.
I've seen some other style tissue bins with GM logos on them ...
Not so sure I've seen all that many of these.

I'm gonna go out on a limb and say 67-73 all series, dealer item. Think it was 74 they went to that paint-to-match thing that went under the front seat. but the trouble with those is they don't work with a 60/40 power seat, and they have GM logo, not Oldsmobile.
I have one of these in my 76 Ninety Eight, though truth be known I'd rather have a mini-console. I unfortunately sold the last one of those I had about a year before I bought the 98.

I think I just stumbled upon one in Allan R's car.

Not the most close up pic of it ... but it appears to be the same one I have.
So ... the mid-upper 60's to early 70's seems about right then.
I've had it too long to remember the details of what it was rumored to be out of when I acquired it.

That looks more modern than the one I have that has directions from 1971. The one I have fits under the seat - I've seen a few of those and they are listed as 68 - 76 or 71-76 but I really don't know for sure.

Umm, Here I is. Yes that's a pic of my car all right. The tissue dispenser is a dealer OTC option that was available for it. I still have the box for it out in the shed. Group 8.891 Tissue dispenser and litter carrier. Part number 983191. Original cost - 6.10 The reason it's also called a litter carrier is there is a litter carrier built into the dispenser as you can see in the photo.
The metal bracket attaches to the bottom of the tissue dispenser and the long rods then pierce the carpet and slide under it to give stability. The dispenser I got was NOS and NIB. It also contained a package of GM tissues! Doesn't use regular size tissues - they are more like the medium sizes you can buy as Kleenex pocket packs.
As far as rare? Let's say they're not common and they are certainly not a high demand item. I did pay a ridiculous amount $$ for it several years ago (around 45.00 IIRC) But that was for NOS and NIB. As you know it's made of plastic and has plastic chrome plating on the rocket emblem. I know it's correct for at least the 68-73 models with bench seat. Could prolly be added to pre 68's but I don't think it was a production item for them at the time.

I thought 45 while I was typing this out. Actually I keep my ebay reciepts and went back to look it up. You are right - it was 147.00. Had to go back and amend this post to the thread. If you need a copy of the mounting instructions, I believe they're still in the box
Can't believe I paid that much - Wow! And at the time the Canadian $ was only worth about .70 against the US. I was also working and getting a decent wage at the time. I couldn't justify that $ for a tissue dispenser now that I'm retired

Perhaps you inserted a "1" then by accident ... in the thread from 2008 ?.
Based upon the 2008 comment ... I was figuring the $14x something was @ the correct amount.
Since you referred to yourself as insane there.
$45 doesn't rate as insane for that IMHO.
Even $145 wouldn't have been insane to me for something cool & rare .....
Maybe just a bit aggressive & determined (in a bidding situation that is).
But I've been called insane & plenty of other things in my lifetime so my opinion might not mean much.

$$ Correction for ^^^
See ^^^ I went back and looked at my epay receipt, so I reposted the correct info. In retrospect I think I was insane to spend that $$ at the time but it was something I WANTED, not something I needed and my wife LET ME buy it because she's a sweetheart. (BTW the USPS shipping cost was 17.50 and I also got dinged at the customs for another 12.72 so the whole thing ended up costing $177.22!!) THAT's insane IMO for a piece of plastic that originally sold for just over $6.00! If you have the original box and original instruction sheet for that one of yours, you might be able to get some $$ for it.
But also a word of caution. Back in 2007 (when I bought that) the recession hadn't hit yet - the housing market was still ok and the bank collapse hadn't happened, unemployment wasn't rampant and there were less jobs being farmed out to offshore production. Today - it's around 5 years since I bought that and the economy and disposable income isn't what it used to be.
IMHO that dispenser would be a good buy/sale at around the 80-100 mark but you'd need the right buyer. As you know you have to test the water. Not a lot of interest in some of the obscure options of the day - you know that from the night-watch unit you've still got. Have you tried selling at any of the local car shows or swap meets? The Fall Carlisle show is coming up soon..http://www.carsatcarlisle.com/events/fall-carlisle/ and of course there's always ebay....

the one I have is for bucket seats and mounts under the seats. I thought maybe it was a very rare option. I remember watching ebay for the same piece. You can go 6 months and not see one like it then in two weeks see three of them. Priced all over from selling in the 40s to close to $200. Mine's still in the box with instructions, not sure I'll ever put it in. I agree with Alan, you could probably get 150 from the right person at the right time but 75-100 should be a quick sell.

No box and/or instruction sheet(s) on this.
If a sheet fell out of the sky I wouldn't exactly swat it away.
I have no use for this setup up at this time & I certainly won't anytime in the near future.

That's one of the paint-to-match jobs that won't work with 60/40 power seats. Not too sure they work with buckets either.
#20
That's exactly what I have with the same directions, so my guess is either that's a reprint for a dealer installed option available earlier or that is the first printing of an option that came out in 71 but clearly would fit earlier models.
#21
It says it works for intermediate buckets 1971-1972, and for non powered 60/40. The instructions for 1970 and older are not very detailed. I bought it years ago and the guy had 2, a sandalwood one and a black one. I bought Sandalwood, which is my interior color. So although they might have been painted, I know they were available in at least 2 colors.

I looked up the 981798 Litter container I have on the Performance Years (Pontiac) website. They have a section for subscribetrs to look up NOS part numbers. The 981798 is lister for all except power seats and for 1937-1981, but no color is specified.

Need to take some more pics but .....
Anyone want to stake their claim to this for say I dunno .....
$125 shipped to their door before I list it in the classifieds ?.
I'm certainly not going to get any use out of it anytime soon.

I posted on ^^^ your for sale thread but I know of 2 Service Oldsmobiles that belong to a Mortuary in Indianapolis that has these mounted in the cars in both rear and front. One is there Hurst the other was here service limo. It has it mounted on the front hump and rear areas. I remember asking the owner about it at the car show as I thought it was neat and and he said it was an option for standard Old's but you more than not seen them always in Service cars(Hursts, Limo, Ambulance etc). I also remember reading some where on a thread or site specific to Service Old's and someone claimed these were almost always standard on service vehicles in the health and living sectors(Ambulance, Hurst, Limo etc. Not sure how much is true to that I am no expert. Just thought I would share what I was told, seen and researched.
