Olds Intrigue?

I know nothing about these cars other than somebody told me they have a caddy motor . Car has 65000 miles and needs ball joints and tires. Guy wants 500$.
Just wondered people's experiences with these cars...any input would be great!

Thanx,
Ted

Oh ya, it's a 1999

If memory serves that year you had 2 V6's either 3.8 or 3.5 I have had both in different cars liked both but the 3800 series two is listed as one the best engines that GM built!

$500 bucks for 65k car sounds like a smokin deal!
To add to it, could it be an Aurora 95-99 had 4.0 aka baby northstar?

Pat is correct, if it has a Cad engine,it is a Aroura. I had a 98 Intrigue, with the 3.8 V6, no problem with the car.

I've heard the car starts to develop electrical problems around 135K, but at 65K for $500 you have 70,000 miles of driving before worrying about it

Thanks for imfo!. Prob pick it up tomorrow and put it on the hoist. If nothing major and it runs and shifts okay, I will use it as a 3rd car around here.

If its the aurora check the head gaskets thoroughly if they are leaking into the cylinders only place that will replace them is the caddy dealer at a cost of about 3 to 4 grand . This is not your fathers oldsmobile motor.

or what the Cadillac guys call the "Shortstar"....

But 500 bucks for a car that needs just that work is a great deal for a home mechanic.

NOOOOO!!!!!!

The Aurora V8 is a Northstar with a smaller bore, thus the 4.0 liter displacement instead of 4.6. The Intrigue used a V6 based on a Northstar (actually, the 4.0 liter Aurora motor). Since this V6 is a Northstar with two cylinders cut off, THAT's why it was called a "shortstar". 4.0 liters x 6/8 is 3.5 liters.

70,000 miles of driving? Hell, for $500, if the car gets him to next week, it's paid for itself!

My 2001 Intrigue, 3.5L engine, started to give me electrical problems long before 130,000 miles.
If you google and read about them, you'll see a lot of people have had problems. The headlights dim or go out altogether. From what I've read, GM knew about this problem and did nothing. People have been told they need new alternators, and they do no good. My Intrigue has just a little over 100,000 miles on it. We've had to start replacing sensors the past couple months - the throttle position sensor, and one of the fuel sensors, I forget what it was called. The first sensor I had replaced years ago, was some kind of crankshaft sensor. I love my Intrigue though. It still wants some kind of air pump thing for over $400, but it's not getting it. For $500, you can't go wrong! I've replaced the sway bar, tie rod ends, etc... a few years ago, but have had no major problems with the car at all, knock on wood. If it has a spoiler on the trunk lid, watch for water in the trunk every time it rains! It collects in the trunk lid and when you open it high, it dumps out all over you. It will also collect the water down in the spare tire compartment. My daughter drives the car now but I'd love to restore it when she gets a newer car. It's starting to show it's age.

intrigue

that is a good price....my 99 intrigue 3.5 has 170.000 and runs like new. no major problems at all and minimal rust(replaced a brake line) it is a great value car. 4.0 was not offered in the intrigue, just the auorora and early auroras are prone to oil leaks

I always thought Intrigues were pretty cool cars. I rented one with a 3.5 about ten years ago, I was impressed with it for what it was. Of course it was a new car at the time, but it was solid and fairly quick.
