olds-camino?

WOW!!! Were these production cars or just concepts? What year? Was the model actually called a touring coupe? Are there many out there in unrestored condition for a reasonable price? If so I may have just found my next project.

None of the above. These are all hand-built customs by people unrelated to Olds or GM.

Funny this came up... I was bored last night, so I was looking around eBay for cars in the area and came across a 1983 GMC El Caballero, with an Oldsmobile 350 diesel. I have just never come across one of these. After reading through the Wiki entry for it, seems like there was some big problems with those old Oldsmobile diesels. I actually contacted the seller about taking a look it as it is only a few miles from my house. He claims that it runs really well, and he is only looking for around $2,800 OBO. It seems like it would be a cool beater. Anyone ever come across one of these?

I'm a little upset that you posted this, however. I live close enough that I may have to go look at it!

Ha sorry about that Joe! I just heard back from the gentleman selling it, and he said that he is going to he showing the car this weekend. I have had my eye out for an El Camino beater, just for puttering around, not to mention the hauling ability and just not seeing too many around. It's always good to be different! I looked at one a few weeks ago, for sale in a grocerystore parkinglot. It was a 1970 with a built 350/350 that supposedly ran top notch, but the thing was almost 100% rusted out! There were holes in the bed the size of grapefruits. The only panel that didn't look like it needed to be replaced was the fiberglass cowl hood. Oh yeah and he only wanted $6,000 for it! It sucks. I envy all you guys that live where some people are just givin old cars away. Like that recent post on here where the gentleman in Texas was selling a 1972 Cutlass for $1,200??!? You can't touch anythig around Baltimore for less then $3,000. At least anything worth touching. There was a dealership a few miles from my house that had an original 1972 442 w29 up on eBay, sold yesterday for about $13,000. I thought that was pretty cheap compared to some o the prices I have seen. That's why I was so excited to see this GMC for pretty cheap, and close by, but was alittle turned off because of what I read about the engine. Was it really that bad? That it gave the engine "a black eye for many years afterwards?"

It's just too bad they get labeled as they do. We should coin a completely new word for them that reflects the Oldsmobile heritage, forget the El Camino relationship altogether. Something like Rocket Hauler. Maybe we should start a thread soliciting ideas.......

My brother and I had wanted to cut his 84' Firenza 2 door hatch and call it a Cutlass Sierra. I hated seeing for sale ads that were selling an Olds Sierra or Cutlass Sierra. Too bad the floor gave out, I really loved that car.
