Depends upon what you want to do with the engine.
Any will work well for a daily driver/cruiser.
The 68-76 have solid main blocks; 77-up have windowed main webs. Probably doesn't matter unless you are going all out strip/max power.
68-72 have better flowing heads/smaller combustion chambers than the 73-76 #8 heads. The 77-up heads are not good candidates for a performance build but may be acceptable for a driver/cruiser.

I would look for a core for no more than $300. I have seen them as cheap as $150. Also saw a 307 for $600. Don't fall for, it was running when pulled. They are all cores until proven different. Running moter $500 and up. my .02
