Try that same test with a early 70s impala, I bet the late model wouldn’t fair as well. I’m not suggesting that new car safety features aren’t a big improvement, but it’s simple physics. Big, heavy full frame vehicle vs lighter car? And I’m not entirely convinced crumble zones are the ultimate answer either. If so, why do race cars have 14 point cages? Don’t tell me those are designed to give in a collision!!!

I think we we can all agree the safest car in the world is only as safe as the person in the drivers seat.
Crumple zones aren't the ultimate answer. Not taking the car on the road is. But crumple zones help enhance passenger car safety, as does abs, efficient brakes, better tires, seat belts, air bags etc. The only perfectly safe car is one that is never driven, meanwhile all the above help in the event of an accident. Road engineering and teaching drivers to drive safely also help. But nothing can prevent all accidents happening.

Don't mean to minimize the importance of safety, but it seems like this thread has been hijacked...

Very true, even young kids are brainwashed. I was driving the Cutlass home from work one day and as I passed a group of young boys sitting on their bicycles in the park one hollered at me "Yo dawg! Pimp that ride!"

I love driving my old car. We have seasons where I live so the reality is there's only 4 months in a year to really enjoy it. When it's on the rack for winter storage I just pray for spring. Yes it's loud and demands my attention on the road but that's the best part. Building them and driving them. Being a convertible means I can smell and hear everything. The first few miles every year I think the coolant I smell or the noise I hear is my car. Almost always it's someone else in traffic. I'm very lucky to have two sons also into the hobby. They each put a few thousand miles on their old cars every summer and like me can't imagine life on the road without a hot rod. 69 Cutlass convertible. 65 F-85 wagon. 69 Chev (454)

I have a few cars. My 07 Tacoma has a 4 banger, a 5 speed, power steering and brakes, and ABS. Also open rear 2WD. No power to speak of, good fuel mileage, will stop pretty well in snow and ice. I have learned that 300 lbs of sand and new tires really help getting going in snow. My 72 Chevy and 67 Olds drive well, automatic, power brakes and steering. No ABS, brakes are fair. Both take off faster than the truck. 98 Tahoe, good power, good steering, OK ABS. 73 Econoline, manual everything, column shifted 3 speed. You are out there on the front bumper. Not as safe, but fun.
