OEM exhaust system for 1967 442

Anyone have any ideas here. I have a 1967 442 that I bought couple of years ago, and it came with a newly installed Magnaflow dual exhaust system. I finally got the car running the way I like it, but I hate the way the exhaust sounds. Too throaty and the drone is driving me crazy. My original 67 442 that I wrecked in 1977, (dumb kid) had the factory exhaust and I liked the way it sounded. You could hear the distinctive sound of the Oldsmobile motor while driving. Now, I can't hear anything, including the radio at times.

Rockauto has no stock. None of the other Oldsmobile part vendors have OEM exhaust systems, that I found. Looks like Walker discontinued everything. All I can find with Summit and JEGS is performance exhausts. I don't want to take the current system out to put something in that sounds the same or louder.

Anyone have any ideas?

Classic Exhaust makes stock exhaust systems.

Cram a pair of resonators on the existing system?

Change the mufflers. Keep the existing system.

I agree to keep the existing exhaust (assuming it is in good shape) and change the mufflers. I have the DynoMax VT series on my Camaro currently and experience no drone. The idea with this series is that a valve opens when you get on it hard, but otherwise is closed keeping things nice and quiet while avoiding the dreaded drone... I have been very happy with them.

Here is a video explaining the technology

Good luck!

It's basically a brand new system. Everything is 3". It's all welded together as well, not clamped.

Gardner is top notch, and you pay for it.

The large 3" system is the issue from what others have said, similar drone and loudness issues. The largest case Dynomax Super Turbo muffler you can fit should significantly quiet the system.

I'd try putting a "torque" tube on it first. Basically it's a exhaust pipe connecting both sides together. It should help the noise. A muffler shop can do it.

3" doesnt help, but your kind of stuck with it unless you want to start over. I agree change the mufflers out. Also in my opinion the quickest way to ruin a car is with some gawdy tailpipe sticking out the the back. Less is better, you should just barley see the tip. Also my opinion " GARDNER SUCKS", they sold me junk tailpipes several years ago and never stood behind them, horrible customer service, I wouldnt give them another penny. Had a chance to make it right and they turned there head, ARROGANCE. Matt

I was just working on an exhaust system on a 67. So, this is pretty fresh on my mind. Gardner makes the factory style system. It is expensive and if you are not looking to be show correct, it might be a little out of the budget. Classic exhaust lists a system for a 66 442 and it is a bolt in and is not the exact duplicate of the factory system but in the end is very nice and about a 1/3 of the money and is still very similar in sound to the original systems. Does not have the chambered tail pipes but a nice system all the same.

Just my 2 cents

Coming into this late, but simply swapping the mufflers to Walker Dynomax Super Turbos will be the least expensive fix. There's no need to change the entire exhaust system unless you really, really want factory-style pipes.
