Not for those with weak stomachs...Arons 68 convertible

I don't know the details but I saw this car today. I thought it might be Arons but he has now confirmed it with me. He says he is real sore and will get back with details.

just opened a email sent out to the local Olds club

A quick note: on my way to Ashley's yesterday in Big Red, fool in a BMW on
Belt Line between Plano Rd and Greenville (at the nursery at the curve - I
was westbound, he was westbound)) turned directly in front of me into a
church parking lot; I T-boned him. Front end of Red destroyed, all the way
back to the right rear 1/4 panel; I mean DESTROYED. Frame looks to be bent
pretty drastically. I'm in a neck brace, bandage on cut on right arm, bump
on my forehead, and back spasms/nech hurts with movement. Went to Doctor's
Hospital by us and had numerous x-rays CT scans, all OK. Still hurt. Just
taking it easy, per doctor's (and primarily, Juju's) orders. Just
devastated.

Talked with JuJu tonight, although emotionally traumatizing, I am glad that my good friend Aron's face does not look the same. Police have sited the other driver at fault and Aron should be able to recoup any medical expenses as well as vehicle value. Lucky for Aron that unlike the fella that totaled their Miata, this guy is a licensed, documented, and even insured driver in a car that had not been reported stolen!! Love ya Aron and JuJu!

I lost a '71 Skylark the same way - I was in the left lane of a four-lane two-way, guy in front of me on the right swung right, then hard left for a U-turn directly in front of me.
He was illegal and uninsured, but had an insurance card, so I didn't find out until a month later, when he was long gone!

Get well soon, and don't try to get back to work too fast!

man , that makes me sick...I am so paranoid of other idiot drivers on the road that I actually slow down at green lights just to be sure that there is no one running the red from the left or right , and anyone trying to pull out from a driveway or side street.

That's really sad. Aron's such a nice guy and loved "Big Red". Best wishes to him for a speedy recovery. Sure hope he can replace the car.

Damn... Very sorry to hear Aron...
I wish you a fast recovery and Big Red to be repaired (at least I hope it can!)
Glad you are doing well right now, aside from the emotions..
I know EXACTLY where that wreck happened. You can see that church across the creek from my mom's house. Hard to believe both of you were going the same direction and he did not see you.
I curse the moron who caused this and hope his car is in the bone yard now.

I'm glad your OK Aron. Yes the bruises will heal and when your ready we can help you fix this one or find another car.

Was it just last week there was a thread discussing seat belts?

No matter how carful a driver one might be there's always the other guy...and who knows who's behind that wheel!

Oh Aron!! So sorry to hear this! I have tears in my eyes.... Thank God you're not injured worse than you are! That is just a horrible thing. I feel so bad.

That is what scares me when I'm out driving Teepo. People in the newer cars don't understand that these old cars don't stop the same as the new ones, etc... there is a big difference between 40 years ago and today. I watch the intersections and slow down also, even if the light is green. Don't know if some idiot is gonna come flying right on through, or what they're gonna do. I hate it when they're right up my tail pipe too, when I slow down for RR tracks or whatever. Don't they understand we're in old cars?

I hope you feel better - just take it easy and follow Juju's orders, lol! Wishing you a speedy recovery.

Wow. That's nasty. Hope you're OK Aron.

I don't understand how anyone could not check their mirror or look over their shoulder before changing lanes or making an illegal turn across two lanes, but people simply do not pay attention to their driving anymore. Twice yesterday I had to head for the ditch because some idiot was on the phone or looking away from the road and drifted into my lane. I've been in one head-on crash in my life and that is one too many.

I expect the other driver got the worst of it in a t-bone, but most peoples' misery is self-inflicted or due to their own stupidity. It's when they take out someone else who was minding their own business that it gets complicated.

Sandy- they're oblivious. Far as they're concerned, there is no one on the road but them.

Thanks to all for the many kind thoughts, and thanks to Richard for posting the picture; I forgot he works fairly close to where Big Red was taken for possible repair (does their insurance total it? I will buy it back for parts, if so.). Don't know, yet, if it is possible. Frame looks to be bent terribly on the front, and can follow the damage back to the back of the front door where it moved enough to dent the RR 1/4 panel. I'm estimating $13-16 K to repair. No doubt their insurance will claim "just an old Oldsmobile". Am in process of gathering pricing on recently sold/listed comps to show them it ain't a cheapo car! And by the way, I mis-spoke in what Richard posted: I was driving EASTWARD, and he was driving WESTWARD, and he turned directly in front of me. Just all of a sudden I saw total black (as in BMW) in front of me, and briefly thought, looks like bumper cars; felt real, however! Just couldn't/can't believe it. Still don't, and having dreams of what I could have done.........absolutely nothing. No time to get the foot to the brake pedal. I truly am heartbroken, Big Red has been part of our life for 20 years now. I'll keep y'all posted. Once again, many thanks for your thoughts and good wishes and prayers. There's a reason for everything, even though we may not always understand the why. Or as my cousin, Quinten Hope (great guitarist, by the way) says, "It is what it is".

I went and looked at the car a little this morning. I don't see any noticable major jamage to the 1/4. The door did come back and hit it but minor repairable. The frame is bent at the front and might or might not straighten.

Aron- did the lunkhead in the Bimmer offer ANY explanation why he turned in front of you? It ain't like a car like Red isn't noticeable, even if he was blinded by bright sun.

If it can be proven he was on a cell phone or texting when he turned in front of you, I say turn the lawyers loose and go for broke. And as bad as I hate to get lawyers and courts involved in anything, cell phone while driving is one thing that will make me justify it. I really wish it would be federally outlawed and tie it to highway funding same as they did seat belts. It's as dangerous or moreso.

Richard- does it look like the cowl structure was pushed back any? that's always a concern on a convertible that took an off-centered hit like this.

Aron,
Heed the doctor's (and Juju's) advise and take care of yourself first and foremost. Any car can be replaced or repaired. I hope your beautiful '68 is one of them. Hope to see you guys at the Nationals again this year.

And by all means, I wasn't trying to infer that this idiot was on the phone, but I have seen it too many times where people either have the phone up to their ear, or are not even looking at the road as they send their texts. I have had to sit through green lights because some moron was texting their boyfriend/girlfriend. To me, that is just a simple lack of common courtesy. I ride a Harley as well, and that is extremely dangerous.

If it was it was not by much. The bumper and frame took most of the hit and the sheet metal just followed it. The whole car flexed to jam the door into the 1/4 but it flexed back and still has a door gap.
