New Ride 72 S

pickin up my newest toy (new avatar pic)this coming week ,finally found a car that is a driver
that was in my price range and not a basket case ,needs some interior work
but rest of the car is pretty solid with very little visible rust (i know rust never sleeps .It was safetied last fall and had new brakes all around, new lower quarters and paint approx 7-8 years ago .Was gold now blue (Ford Blue!)
Going to look forward to fixing her up ;The Journey Begins!

Looked online forever!seems like and all over the countries (USA,CAN)and what shows up
20 minutes from my house ? a blue cutlass ! in my price range and in great shape -go
figure .Just hoping to get her safetied to drive and start the cleaning process,it's got some
wet oil on the outside of the pan and leaking valve covers of course ,easy fixes. The motor
runs quietly but has a bit of a miss not major but noticeable ,the carb has some plugged
vac lines under the front of the carb ,with screws no less ,so will just need some investigating and cleaning up.It also has big block front springs so the nose is up way to high, seller has new small block springs to go in ,maybe I'll change to a 455 and leave the springs in not sure right now.

Does the car have air conditioning? If not, the springs are probably for a Cutlass with air. The 455 isn't much different than the 350.

So here is the scoop from the vin- 3F87H2M212598 F -F-85 ,87-2 dr hardtop,H-350 2bbl ,M-Lansing assembled. The car has a 4 bbl on it so the motor may have had a 4 bbl put on it or might not be the original motor ,have to check the engine code ,no A/C ,power drum brakes all around and power windows by armstrong!

Check the motor stamping pad. The motor could have been upgraded to a 4bbl from a 2bbl. The H code is for a 350 2bbl. Judging by the VIN last 6 I would guess it was built in Nov or Dec of 72.

I looked up today the carb number and its from 1975 so maybe the engine might be too couldn't make out the number on the engine pad though .I have an issue with one of the signal lights at the front ,it won't blink and its a new bulb ,the signal relay under the dash
looks like a new piece so...any thoughts ?

Check the connector just behind the bumper. Clean and refit, then see if it flashes. That's a beautiful looking car. Screaming for some side stripes tho!

update

Updated some new photos ,have had the car almost a month now !,passed a safety ,nothing needed ,driving her on the road and having fun cruising around
installed new door seals ,doors don't rattle as much anymore ,have a trunk seal
but need to clean up the seal groove first and do some painting .Painted the chebby rims semi gloss black and removed the trim rings ,they'll have to do for
now while my funds recuperate !Didn't know that you need an appraisal for the
MTO to get the ownership changed over ,what a PITA ,another money grab.
There should be a limit set for how much $$$ the MTO can charge for a 40 year
car that has been sold four or five times ,say $500 tops .The appraisal fella mentioned that he appraised a car not too long ago that had been sold 17 times! MTO loved that car for sure ! Enough for now

The joys of ownership - the pains of bureaucracy. Nice work on the louvers and the wheels. At least they don't scream Chevy at ya from a distance.

If the doors are rattling, it's not the weather stripping. You can adjust the door latch so it fits tighter too. There are 3 screws you loosen to reposition the latch. Sounds like it needs to move 'out' just a tad.

Yeah bureaucracy is the appropriate word ,also !@##@$$%,the MTO wouldn't change the ownership until I had proof of insurance ,but I needed the ownership in my name to send to my Classic Car insurer ,I had to piggyback my Cutlass onto my daily driver temporarily
so I had a policy # to give the MTO !Yes the joys of ownership !!!
Thanks on the wheels and louvers ,it looks good from 50 ft anyways !!!LOL

well got lots done today ,washed the engine with super clean ,changed the valve cover gaskets ,and painted the engine ! I like being off on holidays
Used VHT gold flake paint no.SP404 ,turned out nice i think ,I painted the water pump already cast steel and power steering pump semi gloss black.Just need to find a nice dual snorkel air cleaner from a H.O. 307 and that'll finish it off for now .

Looking good. Here's a quick and easy tip for if you ever have to do this again. Instead of using tape (which is a pain and often doesn't stick where you want it because of oils/grease) wrap the stuff you want to keep original in aluminum foil. It's easy to form around awkward parts and has a great flexibility. Then when you peel it, much easier than tape. Your could have done that with the carb and linkages really easy. Now you gotta do the bottom....

Yeah, I know. Why didn't I say something earlier??? No worries, it's all good. Your engine looks a ton better than it used to.

Yeah I actually did the foil trick when I painted the brake booster, but I hate the feel and sound of the foil ,gives me the *******!!!,the blue tape i used really sticks well and peels off easily enough .Not too thrilled with painting the bottom now ,actually neither was the factory ,they didn't get much paint done there ,that's why the oil pans rust!

just came back from picking up my kids at the local pool ,seems that i have a bit of blue smoke coming out the driver tailpipe with exceleration from a stop ,checked all the plugs that I just put in a couple weeks ago ,all good except for number 3 cyl that was a black
and oil covered i think ,or could it be a a spark plug wire that isn't doing its job and is wet from not firing properly ?car seems ok doesn't feel like it has a miss ,any thoughts ?

Nice car. Glad you posted picture of the engine. Having Ford blue paint and chevy rims I was beginning to think you had a chrysler motor in there. Keep us updated with pictures. You know we ALL love pictures.

Update On My 72

So after doing a bunch of work last week I have a new tranny mount installed and a new tranny modulator ,which I believe was causing most of the smoke problem as the the old part was letting the engine suck up tranny fluid into the number 3 intake and being burnt out the exhaust ,thanks to all the guys who chimed in with their thoughts ,i may still have to change the valve seals eventually but as of right now Im not fogging the neighbourhood ,definitely learned something -(that what you think your problem is may turn out to be something you never thought of )
So my tranny mount was trash so ill have to look at my motor mounts too they could be the same .New mount makes a big difference when you put it in gear doesn't clunk anymore, worth the time to do plus the $20 for the part .The bolts were tough to get out that hold the crossmember to the frame ,cursed a few times as I jammed my knuckles when I used my impact gun with a wrench on the top side ,little bit of blood now occupies a spot on my frame ,just a small donation to the cause ! I scored some black rear door panels from a guy in town who also had an Oldsmobile chrome vanity mirror cover which he said was rare all for $80

Glad you got the tranny problem fixed. That new modulator sure looks tiny compared to the old one. Long as it works though. The rear inside panels look to be in really good shape; OEM parts always seem to fit better.
re: the vanity mirror cover? Not for 72 Cutlass. They never had that. The vanity mirror on the 72 A Body has black trim around the edges like on the rear view mirror. The mirror has 2 pressure fit tabs that snap the mirror into the p.s. visor. You can use the trim piece no problem but someone wasn't being straight with you on its origin. Still, for 80.00 you got a great deal on what you bought.

Here are pics of the an OEM vanity mirror installed on 72 sunvisor - had to dig it out of the shed for ya!

That's ok Allan if it's not for a 72 I thought it
was a neat item and I wanted the guy to throw
it in with the deal for the panels ! By chance do
you know what car or year it might be for ?

Although I am not 100% on this I would suggest 64-66. I found this on an ebay search and the seller claims 66/67. He wants 250 for it. On another auction, just the frame with some pitting was 10.00

Either way, you got some great deals. BTW, if you look at that pic showing the fasteners? It looks like they are a Chicago style screw which means you would have a hole right through the visor to install it.

Hey thanks Allan you are the professor ! I 'll have to
see if I want to mount it in the visor or not , I'm changing
over to black so if I take apart the visor is there a way
to use a different type of screw that won't go all
the way through ?
