New Ride

Just wanted to give everyone an update since I sold my 69 Cutlass a month ago. I did not want to sell it but it needed too much work to finish and with my new job I just did not have the time to work on it.

Well, I started looking for another Cutlass that needed a lot less work and I found a nice one. A 71 Cutlass Supreme in dark Green, with 42k org miles on it, and one repaint done in the original color. The only thing it needs is the front seat reupholstered since it has a crack in it that is about 6" long.

It is being shipped here this week from Indiana. I will post pictures once I get it.

Just got off the phone with the transporter, he just picked up my car in Indiana a few minutes ago. He still has to pick up a 68 and 69 Camaro east of Cincinnati and then drop them off in Maryland and then come by my house Tuesday night. So if all goes well, I will have it then. Can't wait to see it and drive it! Of course it's going to be 65-70 today and tomorrow and supposed to rain on Wednesday. Figures!!

Thanks Pat. Yeah I did not think I was going to find one so quickly. I figured that it would difficult to find a nice unmolested one at a decent price. I could not have finished my 69 for the money I paid for this one.

Yeah I agree it's definitely not good to go through Cutlass withdrawal so I should only have to sit here shaking for 1 more day.

And yes it is green. When I working on my 69, I was going to paint it either green, metallic medium blue or silver. So not only did I find a nice car but even in one of my favorite colors.

So I will post pics once I get it. Thanks!

Congrats on finding a new Cutlass to work on and enjoy. So does this mean you have to change your user name to old skl 71?

Thanks Tony. It will be nice to actually drive around in a Cutlass instead of working on one all the time. I like resto work, but I think I only drove my 69 about 300 miles in the last three years. With two little ones running around, time is at a premium.

Sorry Jamesbro, I went over to the dark side! Actually I still prefer 69's but this was too clean to pass on. I thought he might cut me a little slack since it is an Oldsmobile!

Thanks Wolfman. Well, that's a thought but I am not sure how easy that is to change your name.

Yes I did get it! It arrived at 10pm Tuesday night and I had to work overtime today so I have not had a chance to take pictures. Weather permitting, I will take pictures tomorrow and post them. Sorry, didn't mean to leave you hanging!

I can tell you it is in excellent condition and exactly as described by the seller. There are some good people on ebay.

I drove it tonight for a quick ride and she drives like new. Has flowmasters on it so it has a nice sound accelerating and it is not too loud on the highway.

Excellent , sounds like you have a driveable resto project with not too much resto Will you be putting it away to do some work on it over the winter , know of any plans for it yet?

It is pretty much very driveable with a few small things that need attention. When I have the time, I will go over everything and make a list of what it needs. But it is mostly minor things with the exception of reupholstering the front seat. A lot better than what I had before. My other car needed the motor swapped out, trans rebuilt, 4.10 gears changed out for 3.42's, front disc brake set up, and paint. When you only get maybe a few hours a week to work on it, it would have taken me a long time before I really could enjoy it. And I always seem to be working on other people's cars instead of my own!

I usually don't put things away for the winter unless the weather gets really bad. As long as the roads are clean and dry, I will take them out for a drive to keep everything going.

I had headers on my last Cutlass with flowmaster 40's and it sounded very aggressive with too much resonance in the cabin while cruising. This one is straight duals with flowmasters. Not 100% sure but they look like the 40's but the sound is just right. I'll have to get underneath and check out the numbers on the mufflers.

Ok guys I wanted to take pictures today of the Cutlass but the weather wouldn't agree with me. Hopefully it won't be raining tomorrow and I will post them then.

Have not had trouble , only when the picture is too big. I find that I can't upload anything over about 1.25 mgb. You can right click on the picture you are trying to upload and check out properties and that should tell you how big the picture is.

Picture File Reduction

I use IrfanView! It's easy to work with and it's free as well. It will reduce your picture to whatever the Website requires.

Ok, finally got the pictures to post of my new ride:

1971 Cutlass Supreme
350 4bbl, turbo 350
42k original miles

IMG_0850.jpg?t=1259029652

IMG_0851.jpg?t=1259031098

Has dual exhaust with flowmasters. No Oldsmobile script on the trunk. I looked inside the trunk to see if someone filled in the holes and there were none. I thought they all came with the Oldsmobile letters on the back?

Thanks Sandy. I have to take more pictures so stay tuned. I took it out for a 40 mile drive and it drives great, just like it probably did when new.

It had a miss at cruising speed so I went over the ignition system and found burnt points and a coil that had too much resistance. (The original delco-remy) So I went to three auto parts stores today and none, I mean NO ONE had a coil in stock for my car! The NAPA store ordered one in for me so hopefully it will be in tomorrow am. Then I can get her out for more pictures.

She is, thanks Pat. The body is completely straight and the paint is phenomenal. Chrome is original and with just some minor scratches.

The car has had 3k miles put on it since 1981 so I am going over everything mechanical to see what needs attention. I am giving her a tune up today. After that, pulling the wheels to check the brakes and I have to change the pan gasket on the transmission. Then the driver's seat has a couple of cracks in it so I am going to pull it out and reupholster it. (Waiting for a Lengendary Auto Interior sale) Other than that, I just want to take her out and drive her!

A picture of the rear. I did not know that the Oldsmobile lettering on the trunk was an option? I looked inside the trunk and did not see any holes for them. Is that right?

My 98 only has the script on the grill but not on the trunk lid.

I have seen pictures of other 70-72's and they have the OLDSMOBILE letters across the trunk. I thought they all came with that. Maybe it is was not on the Supreme model?

You could look through the gallery at other cutlass' to see if that year is supposed to have them. Unless there are others with that car who may also pipe in on this.
