New Olds Book
Here's a link to the new Olds book by Mike Siedlik. He was selling them @ the Nats and got some good feedback on it. Mike is a long time Olds guy who put a lot of time and effort into the book.

As far as the so called race for 60 feet in first gear if you can't win that with those wide *** radial tires and 4:88 gears you have a huge problem!

He prefers that I mail them to him so he feels like he paid not only do I have to give them to him I have to stamp them as well...

I have one that I have not had time to go thru yet. Maybe 1/2" thick. LOTS of info on details I never knew- wheels, etc.
Like all such books I believe I spotted numerical/ factual errata in a quick perusal, but THANKS to Mike for assembling this book. We can compose an errata sheet and correct future printings maybe.

Mine showed up today... kudos to Mike for putting it together. There's a lot of good and neat information in there. The somewhat disappointing part is I noticed a handful of errors in a 5 minute skim... '68 alternator numbers don't match the PIM (or other references I've seen), it's missing the '68 '8255 carb, possible water pump discrepancies (wrong length with the 400269 and "O" description)...
I hate to say it, but a lot of the editing and typographical/spelling errors make it look like it got rushed to print without appropriate proofreading. Getting a $35 book with 13 errata in the first month with a commitment of "more to come" means that this book will probably be at its best with a second edition. At least he's nice enough to publish them on his website so people can see an updated list of changes (as long as it gets maintained, which nothing will be forever).
There's my 0.02... having a solid Oldsmobile reference is nice, but with publishing something comes the burden of accuracy. We'll see how well it gets vetted with time.

Hello
As you all know nothing is in concrete. Since I came out with this book I have found and other Oldsmobile enthusiasts have come forward with additions and a few corrections. About the first of the months I will put up on our website www.thegoodoldsdays.com an addition/correction list.
In this book I looked at Oldsmobile books/literature/ real parts, something that I could go back to if questioned. There are so many publications out there that go by what the internet says(YA Right!) I want everyone to know that WE Oldsmobile people know what we are talking about. If you see anything and can prove it by facts please email me. There is so much information out there that I learn from about everyone I talk with.
Aug. 1 2015 Here are some of the things I have found. P6 Extra 0 in VIN. P12 Column2 H Delete Heater & Defrost, Column4 V needs to be in 5, P36 1966 400 Tri-Carbs need MT behind them, 1966 7036250 needs K19 behind AT, P40 Seen a 5A head, P46 1971 1112034 should have OAI behind A.T., P47 1965 1966 DE “?” should be a R 384784, P51 1966 330 5 casting # 391135 P52 1970 No 2 bl 455 intake H 398625, 1970 “OLDS W-455” ad dates 1/19/70 and 1/29/70, 1971 2bl 455 P 407568, P55 1967 first 4.11 O should be P, P62 Service Replacement Starter should be 1964 (1965-1967) Need more data on starters, P63 Ad bypass hole #1 .560 - .542, #2 .560 - .410, #3 .560 - .542, #4 .560 - .410, P71 Looking into 1971–72 water pumps, P75 SSII wheels all say 15x7, L to R 15x7, 14x7, 14x6.

Got mine yesterday & same as the above posts "lots of typos or errors" in the '67 tag decoding (442 being "4V"??) & noticed the H/O #s stuff seems to be not included?
Is Mike a member here?
available '67 vinyl tops are listed as: 2-black & 6-champagne ONLY
if that's accurate, what's this?

I've ordered one and am waiting for it to arrive. I agree with Hairy, if the author spent a lot of time on it lets not spend our energy bashing him, but help. Maybe create a thread with suggested corrections? Only corrections accepted are ones documented from factory literature? What do you guys think?

OK, here's info to fill in a blank on page 51. 1966 330 intake #5 for the cali emissions 2bbl is casting number 391135. I've got the engine I pulled from a parts car several years ago. Here's a few pictures. John

If he or his friends can't tolerate constructive criticism, what's the use of the book? I certainly don't want to rely on 442.com.
The author should step up to the place and embrace the constructive criticism without some of you threatening us, the consumer hungry for a good Olds book. I am sorry to hear that there are issues that will prevent me from buying edition 1, but I'll be poised to buy edition 2.

Yes, the book has more information specifically about '64-'72 Olds a-bodies than any other currently available publication & it took time, money, and effort to bring this to MARKET. Mike didn't do it for the "love" of the hobby, or he would've put the pages on his current web site "FREE" for all to see.
Attached is a redlined pic of the '67 "decode" page, this is the info I know to be wrong. A little too much red ink for my liking.
Can I trust the info on a '65-'66 car that I know little about?
Am I waiting for the opportunity to purchase Vol. 2? NO! I'm not particularly happy with my purchase of Vol. 1 (First Printing).

It has to be difficult to keep everything 100% straight and accurate for a book like this. To trace and verify every part # with a zero tolerance for errors seems a bit dreamland to me.
However, if I was told that I needed a certain part number for a restoration project and it turned out to be something else that was needed to make the car authentic, that would disappoint me.
I'm buying the book just for the pics. And I'll verify with additional research as needed for the items that matter the most to me. Would be easier if on Amazon. Didn't see it there.

There are so many part # changes during production it ain't funny. I wouldn't take on the task of writing a book like Mike did just because of the many variables. I can point out things about the 66's that may be incorrect but the other years are out of my area. There's no one man or woman that knows everything about every year and model. Kudos to Mike for the effort and I'm sure he's already correcting the discrepancies in the book.

First off I would like to thank everyone for buying my book!
As Mike said I did come out with some corrections on Aug. 1.

Thanks John for the picture of the 5 manifold.
1967 Vinyl top colors are correct, the 3 colors are for Convt. Tops only.
I am a car guy and not a writer, I spent a lot of MY time looking this stuff up and making sure I got it right but I was the one that was proof reading and rereading and rereading. I sent some stuff out to be proof read but how long do you wait for a reply?
I did this book because of how much those other books by writers getting their information from GMs data base and hearsay and got a lot wrong and only looking at the 442 - W30 & Hurst/Olds. I wanted to include the Cutlass' & F85's.
I am going by older literature from Oldsmobile of the day, NOT today.
I don't mind criticism BUT please tell me where you got it from. I am not from Missouri, BUT SHOW ME!
Oh, by the way, just because your car has it on, doesn't mean that it is correct.
Cars were being made to get out the door.
I may sound MEAN, all I want is to make it correct.
I need to find time to make a pdf of the above info and put it on my site. I own my own business and need to keep my own doors open.
Thank You, Mike Siedlik
OK. Let the Flogging Begin!!!

the '67 SPECS booklet I posted pics of above is marked "REVISED 3/67", but no indication on what was changed
the body tag above is from 7M270101, body assembled first week of March - it is the earliest tag pic I have with a "white" vinyl top
mystery solved, THANKS!
What is your source for the 1-5 GROUP decodings?

He needs to change the words in description he left out a word that makes it look like it doesn't have any info on 442's or W-30's.
This one-This book doesn’t look at the 442’s and W-30’s but all “A” bodies(F-85 – Cutlass – Cutlass Supremes).

Attached is the '68 PIM information for alternator codes and their use based on accessory drive configuration. If you open the pics in a new browser window they should be readable once zoomed in.

hurst68olds, I have the 1967 Advanced Copy, Oct. 1966 and the March 1967 SPECS books. Hard to catch all the changes they added or took away. Oct. 1966 just had the Black and Champagne as the colors only.
The group decodings have been added to throughout the years and is always changing. I think I copied and pasted from the '65,s and got interupted at some point. And to think I own a 1966 and a 1967! Mike Richards, Curtis Anderson and Joe Donnelly after they seen it asked "What was I Smokin'" Curt is sending me his revised list for the 1966's. Could I get a list from you for the 1967's? And can I use your name?
WOW, I can not believe I spelled the word Fourth as "Forth" and spell check just let it go through. LOL
Doug, OK I can see that I could have added the word "just" in there for more clarification. I remember writing it but what page is it on?
83hurst guy, I was going to use those numbers but was hesitant because it was a "part number" more than a "stamped number". I remember looking at some of them '64-'72 and not finding a stamped number just a part number. It's very confusing because they used the numbers for both sometimes.
Guy's, I have no problem with you pointing something out to me.
Most all of you are focused on one make where as I am trying to get everyone happy.
I am working on pullyes right now and have almost all pullyes identified but I would like to put the water pump length with the set they go with. Can't find anything with pullyes and water pumps together. Might just start going through my Olds parts books and matching them. Anyone have any suggestions?
Thank You to you all, Mike
