New Car Stereo...
New Car Stereo...
...well, new phone anyway. My new Galaxy S3, plugged into a Pioneer amp under the passenger side seat, with pioneer door speakers. Since I have a convertible, I can't have a nice stereo... so this replaces the iPod I've been using... and I love it! I've got the 600+ songs I had on my iPod... + local FM radio stations... + buffered SiriusXM satellite (never cuts out like in my other cars... even in tunnels)... + integrated navigation (turns the music volume down/up for directions)... + integrated hands-free, voice activated calling & even voice text. The music app I'm using (PlayerPro) has a nice 10 band EQ and sounds much better than the iPod ever did... and as good as any car stereo I've ever had. Best thing is, when I get there, I just unplug it and put it my pocket. With everything out of site I just leave the doors unlocked (I've already had the top cut & replaced once.) I've been thinking about upgrading for a while, cuz I was really getting tired of the music on my iPod, but I actually figured the radio reception would be weak and spotty on a cell phone... NOT! It really works great. It's now one of those rare things that actually works far better than I had ever expected it to!

Just finished my install. Thanks for the good idea, Mak. I may end up putting in a real head unit eventually, with one of the nice under-dash housings sold by a fella on CO. But for now this is pretty great. I'm using an app called Power Amp. I think I paid $5 for it. The amp is a pawn shop special that needed a little rewiring.

I used four removal adhesive strips (from those hook thingys), one for each foot. Worked like a charm

I guess this is just a matter of preference and i think technolgy is pretty good and makes life easier but when i get in my 69 i put the radio on or deal with an old 8 track tape that gets caught once in a while and i escape back to the day as realistic as possible even on my poly tires
I like it!
Since I posted this, I've upgraded my system by adding a bluetooth receiver directly to my amp under the seat... now I stream my music library, Pandora, SiriusXM, etc wirelessly from my phone... no cord! The surprising thing is the wireless signal is actually clearer than with the cord (I think I was picking up some interference from the engine.)

Meh, I'm trying to relive my youth; and that means loud tunes, lol. But I promised myself I wouldn't cut into my dash.
Mak, would that receiver work as well with the amp in the trunk? That sounds like another great idea. And yeah, I'm getting some interference but not enough to bother me.

This is the one I have, works great, $29 at Fry's Electronics.
I'll admit, I put some butt-ugly three-ways in the package tray with black grills on top. The speakers are mounted in the trunk and I didn't cut the metal so I can still toss the grills and cover the tray with an acoustic material if I find the right color. Or I may just spray paint the grills to match the interior.
I have a fairly simple system in my car:
- An '80s era AF/FM/cassette player with manual tuning in the dash - so old and low tech appearing that I can't imagine anyone would want to bother trying to steal it. It has good specs and RCA pre-amp outputs, though.
- Remote mounted 4 channel amplifier.
- Kick panel front speakers.
- 6x9 rear speakers in boxes. Can be removed and put in trunk or in the top well when top is up and there are rear seat passengers.
- Cassette adapter hooked to my iPhone to play MP3s, Pandora, etc.
Probably not. I think it's as much about trashing the vehicle as it is stealing the items inside.
I have a Jeep Wrangler and the side and rear windows easily zip out of the soft top, but still the most common complaint I hear in the local Jeep club is that the windows get slashed by punks stealing things. One reason why I have the hard top on these days. When I want to drive something without a roof, I drive the Cutlass.

I have an inexpensive Kenwood AM/FM/Cd with an aux jack, 6" rounds in the doors and 6x9's in the rear pkg tray. 50Watts/ channel and finally got into the 20th century with a plug in MP3. The whole setup was less than $150, took an afternoon to install, and love it.
My purchased $25 used Apple I4 is on a minimal data package and is mostly for phone and text. I can download any music I want to the MP3 or load from a vast assortment of CD's. I just can't see having that big of an expense in a car stereo or phone bill.

I have a pretty good data plan but it will get choked if I go over. And the radio app I have eats it up pretty fast. Mostly, this is for MP3s. But I like NPR so some time soon I'll pick up a CD/radio and mount it under the dash with one of W70442's housings. I can have my three gauges with a single DIN underneath.

($2000+ damage, luckily insurance covered it)... I'll never lock the doors again!
